Sensory play is the focus of our morning each Friday. This week we made our own play dough to enjoy over the next month. Making play dough is a great way to reinforce the spirit of “making your own fun,” and it allows us to experiment with colors, scents, and textures. This week we scented our first batch of play dough with vanilla extract and cardamom, and colored it with blue spirulina powder. It smelled heavenly as we kneaded it, and used little rolling pins, cutters, and stamps. Later in the afternoon, the play dough came out again. This time the children made cookies, adding dried calendula petals for “sprinkles.” I think the blue and gold color combination is so lovely!

…and prove that you understand the worth of time by employing it well. Then youth will bring few regrets, and life will become a beautiful success. |

Our goal .education is to nurture the young child by allowing them what called “a quiet growing time”—an orderly but unhurried time to explore the world with their five senses, developing personal relationships with each other, art, nature, and the movement of their bodies. We also provide many opportunities to learn life skills, welcoming children to participate in their own care and the care of their space, such as by preparing food and cleaning up after themselves.

Our daily rhythm provides both familiarity and variety. Every morning we have time set aside to work together on a guided project. On Mondays our activities are focused on process art and simple crafts. On Wednesdays we do kitchen work. Sensory play is the highlight of our Fridays, with activities that encourage messy, hands on experimentation.

The kitchen is such a rich realm of learning, giving important context to skills such as following directions, taking turns, counting, and practicing descriptive language. This week the the children made their own snack of warm cocoa and apple hand pies.

To make your own hand-pies, cut out thawed frozen puff pastry into your desired shape, spoon some prepared pie filling on top (not too much), and pinch the edges all around with a fork. Bake at 350 until pastry is golden brown and filling bubbles. Hand pies are great for kids because they’re easy to make, easy to serve, and minimally messy to eat.

Watch our stories for a direct link to our new winter children’s playlist. Enjoy 45 minutes of non-holiday music to celebrate the cold weather, winter animals, and sweet treats of the season. I’ve included our favorite version of “Chocolate,” which never fails to get my children dancing! 🍫

“Remember, O Thou Man” is an English folk carol, collected and preserved by Thomas Ravenscroft in his 1611 collection “Melismata.” It’s a joyfully solemn addition to the Advent hymnary, and the repetition makes it easy for little ones to join in.

Are you celebrating Advent this year?

Each child brings a unique self to his education journey, so it only makes sense that each child—even when nourished on a “common bread” education—will have a unique experience and result. Being able to embrace and celebrate the differences is the beauty and peace of alternative education. Who else is ready to opt out of the rat race model?
