Celebrate the latest victory for the Charlotte Surfrider community! 👏

Charlotte City Council voted unanimously to adopt an ordinance amendment that protects pollinator gardens and naturalistic landscapes! This means that native, eco-friendly gardens registered with the city are now officially exempt from traditional landscape provisions.

A huge thank you to the North Carolina Wildlife Federation and all our coalition partners for their incredible leadership and tireless work to make this happen. This is a major win for our local wildlife and our community's ecosystem!

What’s New:

- Naturalistic Landscapes: Now defined as intentionally maintained areas reflecting Southeastern US ecosystems using native plants.

- Pollinator Habitats: Recognized as diverse plant areas designed to support bees, butterflies, and birds without the use of pesticides.

How You Can Help:

- Get Involved: Check out the City’s Registration Page (link in bio) (https://community.charlottenc.gov/pages/pollinator-habitat-naturalistic-landscape) starting in March to register your garden.

- Go Ocean Friendly: Inspired to make a change? Explore Surfrider's Ocean Friendly Garden program (https://www.surfrider.org/programs/ocean-friendly-gardens) to learn how you can create a beautiful, sustainable landscape that protects our local watersheds.

🚨TAKE ACTION! The comment period to oppose new offshore drilling ends TOMORROW, Jan 23!🚨

Demand Congress to Say NO to New Offshore Drilling!

Offshore drilling is a dirty and dangerous practice, causing grave environmental impacts through every phase of the process. On top of that, the U.S. has been a net oil exporter since 2020 and new oil drilling is not needed to ensure our nation's energy supply.

Unfortunately, Congress is considering a massive offshore drilling proposal in the budget reconciliation bill that would expand drilling across millions of acres of ocean. This is a critical moment to protect our ocean and coasts across the U.S.

Take action today and urge Congress to protect all U.S. waters from offshore drilling. (link in bio)

We had a great time planting shrubs, tubelings, and trees at the Charlotte Public Tree Fund’s annual Creek ReLeaf on Saturday! 🌱

Our zone helped plant 163 plants along the Mallard Creek Greenway near UNCC. These plantings help boost air quality, water quality, tree canopy, and wildlife habitat for years to come. 🌳

We even got to watch the release a rehabilitated red-tailed hawk… scroll to see the moment!

Huge thanks to the Charlotte Public Tree Fund, and for making it happen.
