BOOM is Charlotte’s annual artist-led showcase of experimental/contemporary performance and visual art. We bring together carefully curated local and national acts through a collaborative weekend of performance in a Charlotte neighborhood utilizing local business spaces and performance venues. BOOM celebrates the wealth of innovative original work created in our region and across the country, and

exposes Charlotte audiences to new styles they may not have otherwise discovered or appreciated. With BOOM, we’re creating the fusion of creativity and community in our communal backyard.

For the first time ever, BOOM Fringe is happening this Fall! This October, Charlotte's home for bold, boundary-pushing, unapologetically experimental performance returns with a brand-new season and a brand-new energy!

Six years. One incredible voice. 🎤

Today, we're celebrating Boris "Bluz" Rogers as he steps down from the BOOM Charlotte board after six years of service.

Of course, Bluz needs no introduction - he is one of the best known and accomplished artists in town. But here are a few things you might not know about him:

🏆 3x Emmy Award winner
🥇 3x National Poetry Slam Champion
✨ Grammy Nominated
📖 Published author & poet
🎙️ Former Slam Master, Slam Charlotte
🏁 First-ever performer at the NASCAR Hall of Fame induction ceremony, and the first African-American performer to do so.

Bluz has spent his career using words to dismantle barriers and bring people together. BOOM has been lucky to have that same spirit guiding us from the inside for six years.

Bluz has been part of the BOOM story since day one - as an artist for our first major initiative during the DNC in 2012 - which led to the official founding of our organization. Then he performed at Charlotte's very first BOOM festival in 2016, after which he joined our Core Team of Artists that helps guide and curate all our programming. Subsequently he joined our small but mighty Board of Directors.

Of course, this is not a goodbye - we will continue to work with Bluz - as an artist, host, lifelong BOOM Ambassador etc.!

Our BOOM community mourns the loss of Lisa Anne Gravell Tweardy—a beloved leader, mentor, and one of the most influential board members in BOOM's history.

Lisa served on BOOM's board for six years, including three as Board Chair. She helped guide our organization through the challenges of the pandemic, led a transformative strategic planning process, and she was a champion for BOOM staff because she believed organizations should care for the people who make the work possible.

Through her company, Mign, she opened her doors to BOOM time and again. Mign HQ at Camp North End became a home for our board meetings, artist reviews, retreats, and countless conversations that shaped our future.

Lisa believed in artists. She invested in people and helped BOOM become a stronger organization. Though she never sought the spotlight, her impact on this community is immeasurable.

Our hearts are with her sons, family, friends, colleagues, and all who loved her.

Thank you, Lisa. We are deeply grateful for your leadership, generosity, and belief in BOOM.

To our artists: thank you for trusting us with your work, your stories, and your culture. You are the soul of BOOM and every year, you remind us how powerful it is to see the world through someone else’s lens.
