Good evening, Achievers!

What a remarkable evening it was at the 2025 Profiles of Prominence (POP) Scholarship Luncheon and Awards Program! Celebrating four unsung heroes and three deserving scholarship recipients was truly inspiring. The event featured delicious cuisine, smooth jazz by Mr. Will Lee, and the dynamic Achiever Shavonda Bean as Mistress of Ceremony, who kept everyone engaged and entertained throughout the program.

A special thank you to Achiever Chakeena Benjamin and Co-Chair Achiever Gwendolyn Clark for their dedication in making this event a phenomenal success. Gratitude also goes to committee members Achievers H. Alexander, A. Alexander, Edwards, Ginyard, and Hollis for their hard work. Achiever Shirley Sharpe's devotion to the students and QCC as Chair of the Scholarship Committee is deeply appreciated. To all Achievers who sold tickets, solicited donations, served food, and contributed in any way—thank you for your continued support and commitment to service.

The POP honorees receiving awards for outstanding service to the community were:

Allen O. Davis – Community Service endeavors

Cheryl Patterson – Community Service endeavors

Achiever Shavonda Bean – Health & Wellness endeavors

Reverend Abdul R. Muwwakkil – Religious endeavors

The following POP Scholarship recipients received $1,500 each:

A heartfelt thank you to Paris Sharpe for graciously photographing the event and capturing these special moments. You can view the photos here: POP Event Photos.

We put a smile Emoji on the faces of all the little scholars, teachers and support staff at Walter G. Byers Elementary School yesterday (9/18/24). The Principle, Ms. Vonda Davis and Nurse Ms. Chapman, were very appreciative of all the donations we delivered for the health care and safety of students and staff. They said this was a definite need that we fulfilled. Nurse Chapman and other staff members oftentimes provide these needed supplies using there own funds. Our donations were a great relief and provided essential items for Nurse Chapman to care for sick and distressed children throughout the school year. School Nurses are the leaders who bridge health care and education that allow individuals to develop to their full potential. Our donations included:
underwear for boys and girls
socks for boys and girls
deodorant
reusable ice-packs
bandages
nose clips for nose bleeds
Kleenex
baby-wipes

Thank you Achievers for the contributions you made. We are making a difference in the community and the lives of children.

NWOA partnered with our affiliate National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) for our Political Awareness Thrust. On Saturday October 5, 2024 we set up a table at the entrance of West Blvd Library for voter registration. Achievers greeted incoming customers and asked, “Have You Registered to Vote”; “Would You Like to Register to Vote", to engage nonpartisan participation.
Achiever Gwen Clark registered new voters while Achievers Evelyn Hollis, Elizabeth Pendergrass and Carolyn Ginyard, had pamphlets, brochures, voting guides, etc., to disseminate as customers walked through the library.

Additionally, we answered questions, explained the voter ID requirement, provided dates/locations for early voting and encouraged everyone to Get Out and Vote.

Our presence in the public Library was an essential visual aid promoting voter readiness and participation to increase turnout on election day!

One vote can make a difference! One vote can rock the boat!

Thank you Achievers for your dedication and willingness to serve.

What a joy it was celebrating Thanksgiving with the Mothers of Murdered Offspring (MOMO) families. We fellowshipped, served dinner to approximately 250 people, played games, ate good food and enjoyed entertainment by a comedian/magician. As a special treat, our very own Achiever Carolyn Powers was chosen to be the comedians’ assistant. Who knew she could make a yellow ball disappear.Emoji

There was a somber moment while each of the MOMO families called the names of their loved ones and each received a beautiful candle to keep the light shining bright in memory of the deceased. Also, there was much love in the room with 'hugs' and “I Love You's” to give the families comfort, support and encouragement. I am thankful we were a part of that support group.

Achievers Annie Alexander, Carolyn Powers, Deborah Bond, Shavonda Bean, Claudia McCullough and Toye Allen-Tyler thank you so much for your willingness to serve these families. Thanksgiving is an expression of gratitude to God. There is no greater way to show him gratitude than by serving his people.

God Bless You All,
Achiever Sharon Kay

Founders Day is the time of year we honor those who came before us to pave the way for our future. It's a time to rededicate ourselves to the commitment we made at our induction and reaffirm our pledge of service within the community. Our service project, 'Handbags for Hope" demonstrates our continued efforts to build on the Founders' legacy. I am humbled that so many Achievers (14) attended Founders Day and rededicated yourselves to enhance the thrusts of National Women of Achievement, Inc. With your commitment, dedication and support the Queen City Chapter will carry forward our mission with excellence.

A special "Thank You" to Achiever Kharma Edwards and Achiever Gwendolyn Clark for facilitating the Founders Day Program and Achiever Carolyn Ginyard and the hospitality committee for making sure everything was set-up beautifully, organized and cleared neat and tidy.

Sunday worship service at New Zion Baptist Church was the culmination of our Founders Day Ceremony. Our donation of $200 to the church was well received and all Achievers in attendance enjoyed a spirit-filled praise and worship service. NWOA was well represented with ten (10) Achievers and I especially want to recognize Male Achiever Samuel Hollis. Also it was delightful having Achiever Levonia Corry in attendance.

Queen City Chapter of NWOA, Inc., participates in a biannual street clean-up initiative. The City of Charlotte has an Adopt-A-City Street Program and NWOA has adopted Senior Drive. Participants of the program work to improve the appearance of areas that have been neglected. Achiever’s Elizabeth Pendergrass, Evelyn Hollis, Shirley Sharpe, Gwen Clark, Annie Alexander, Brenda Walls, Toye Allen-Tyler, Vickie Lewis, Claudia McCullough and I spent Saturday afternoon (April 12, 2025) cleaning trash, litter, plastic waste, bottles, etc. on Senior Drive and also a vacant field and parking lot at West Charlotte High School. This Community Service Project helps reduce pollution, create a hazardous free environment and beautify the community.

It was an honor to be a part of the 2nd annual Taylor Made Program, Tuesday April 22, 2025 at West Charlotte Senior High School. This program aims to uplift deserving high school seniors by providing them with a tailored suit and presenting a monetary award of $250 each. The essence of Taylor Made revolves around the affirmation statement, “I am a masterpiece, fearfully and wonderfully made.” Taylor Made 2025, recognized twenty (20) outstanding young women who are student athletes. These young ladies were selected by CMS coaches because of their character, academics, impact on the community and genuine need. The program was empowering and the ladies were dressed to impress in their tailor made suits.

Guest speakers were Olympian and professional track star, Gabbi Cunningham, Motivational speaker and author Donielle Polk (2024 NWOA POP honoree) and Etiquette Coach, Donna Murrell. Major benefactors were General Motors, Coca Cola, Thelma Byers-Bailey (School Board Member), John Love (Second Ward Breakfast Club), Queen City Chapter NWOA, Inc. and a few others.
