Our Oceans Need Us, Reason 2: Coral Bleaching
Coral reefs cover less than 1% of the ocean floor, but they support 25% of all marine life. They are among the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet, and climate change is destroying them at an alarming rate.
When ocean temperatures rise, coral expels the algae living in its tissue, turning completely white. This is coral bleaching. Bleached coral isn't dead yet, but if the heat stress continues, it will die.
What's at stake for North Carolina:
NC is home to the northernmost coral reefs on the US East Coast, located off Cape Lookout. These reefs support local marine biodiversity, protect shorelines from wave damage, and sustain the fishing and tourism industries that coastal NC communities depend on. Rising ocean temperatures are pushing these reefs toward collapse.
What can we do about it:
Support policies that aggressively reduce carbon emissions, the primary driver of ocean warming
Advocate for expanded Marine Protected Areas along the NC coast
Choose reef-safe sunscreen when visiting coastal areas
Support organizations working to restore and protect coral reef ecosystems
