We’re excited to uplift an opportunity from our friends at .

Duke Mansion has partnered with the Arts & Science Council as a participating facility in the Venue Access Grant Program. Through this program, eligible organizations and artists can apply to use Duke Mansion’s space for cultural programming, with venue costs covered by Mecklenburg County and administered through the Arts & Science Council.

At Lee Institute, we share a deep belief that creative expression, civic life, and community connection are intertwined, and that access to space should not be a barrier to meaningful cultural work. We encourage our community partners, nonprofit organizations, and creatives to explore this opportunity and consider applying.

Preference is given to applications received by February 11th.

The conversation continues.

Our “Navigating the New Now” series is back and this time, we’re bringing funders into the room.

Why? Because you asked for it.
In our last session, nonprofit leaders made it clear:
→ We need more spaces to connect.
→ We need honest conversations about what’s shifting in our sector.
→ We need everyone at the table—including our funding partners.

We’re working alongside Foundation for The Carolinas, United Way of Greater Charlotte, and SHARE Charlotte to create space for the conversations that matter most right now.

📅 May 27 from 9am - 11am

Earlier this month, we had the pleasure of facilitating a Board retreat for at Duke Mansion. Together, we explored how the Board can grow to meet the evolving needs of the organization and practiced elevator pitches to help members confidently share the mission of Hospitality House out in the community.

We love when we can open the doors of Duke Mansion to support nonprofit and community organizations. It’s always special when Lee Institute’s mission and Duke Mansion’s legacy of service come together.

“Last month, we gathered with our Colonnade and Preservation members for a meaningful afternoon centered on connection and community impact. The event highlighted the important work of several nonprofit leaders in our network:

Angie Bush (ALF Class XXII) of Hospitality House of Charlotte ()

Heather Johnson (ALF Class XXII) of Council for Children’s Rights ()

Janiqua Jackson of Three Sisters Market ()

In a “”round robin”” discussion format, guests had the chance to hear directly from each leader, learn about their organization’s mission, and ask thoughtful questions.

We also took a moment to share more about the work we do at Lee Institute, including how we support nonprofit leaders across the region. It was a beautiful exchange of ideas, passion, and purpose—just the kind of space we strive to cultivate.

Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make this gathering so meaningful.

Mental Health Awareness Month reminds us: the well-being of those who serve our communities is just as vital as the work they do.

At Lee Institute, we see the deep care nonprofit leaders and community changemakers pour into their missions every day. It’s meaningful. It’s powerful. And it’s also a reminder of how important it is to care for yourself along the way.
Your leadership strengthens our communities. But thriving communities start with thriving people.
This Mental Health Awareness Month, let’s commit to:

🌟 Creating spaces for rest and reflection

🌟 Fostering open dialogues about mental health

🌟 Supporting one another in seeking balance
By nurturing our own well-being, we empower ourselves to lead with resilience and compassion.

The best answers are found when we come together.

The funding landscape is shifting, and navigating “The New Now” comes with real challenges. How do we secure sustainable funding? What innovative solutions are emerging? How can we adapt to meet the moment?

Join Lee Institute for a conversation designed for nonprofit leaders like you—those on the front lines of impact, innovation, and community change. Let’s chart a path forward together.

You don’t have to be in Charlotte to be a part of ALF Charlotte Region.

Our Senior Fellows network encompasses leaders from 13 counties across North and South Carolina, bringing different perspectives, experiences, and leadership styles to the table.

This is not by accident. We aim to include diverse representation from throughout the region in every class.

We can’t tell you all the ways these special connections will impact you and your leadership. You just need to be in the room. To learn more about ALF Charlotte Region, contact Liana Montaglione to schedule a conversation.

One of the most rewarding parts of our work is building real connections with our clients. We love being part of their journey as they grow and achieve their goals.

In December, we reconnected with an old client, Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County (). We worked closely with their leadership team and members of the board to reassess and refine their strategic plan to ensure it fit their current needs. We also had the opportunity to facilitate a brainstorming session with their staff to develop goals for this year. ACFCC is a wonderful example of an organization that makes an effort to ensure that their strategic plan is a living document that can evolve with them.

Partnering with ACFCC has been an enriching experience! Not only do we get to support the amazing work that they do, but we also get to appreciate great art while we're there. We look forward to another successful year working alongside them as they grow and achieve their goals.

Having a diverse team is a superpower. The unique perspectives, experiences, and skills within a diverse group can transform how we work and serve our communities. But here’s the challenge: how do you ensure every team member is positioned to do their best work despite the ways they may see the world differently from you—or one another?

Led by Senior Fellow , Leading and Engaging Across Differences is a virtual conversation that delves into the nuances of this very question. It’s an opportunity to explore how to embrace the complexities of diversity, navigate differences with intention, and unlock the full potential of your team.

This is a space for authentic conversations where you can ask your questions, share your challenges, and walk away with actionable insights to lead more inclusively.

When a Senior Fellow is at the podium, you can bet we’re right there in the audience! On October 15th, we joined the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community to hear Sam Smith Jr., chair of the Community Relations Committee (CRC) and member of Class XXII, deliver the State of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Community Relations Address.

Being in the presence of Senior Fellows making such meaningful contributions is truly inspiring. We’re always impressed to see their values in action. Sam’s dedication is remarkable, and we look forward to seeing what he accomplishes next.
