Education on body autonomy and consent start in early childhood. Three things we can teach children from the very beginning:

1. My body belongs to me – I can say no to unwanted touch.
2. I can tell a trusted adult – if something feels wrong, I should speak up.
3. Other people’s bodies belong to them – I ask before touching and respect β€œno.”

The third lesson is by far the most important. We must teach all children – especially boys – that they never have the right to touch someone else’s body without their permission. If someone says no, pulls away, or seams uncomfortable, you stop.

We can, and should, teach children how to avoid becoming victims of abuse. However, we also πŒπ”π’π“ raise children who respect boundaries and understand consent.

Two weeks ago we came together to celebrate Dolly Day. Support for the country music and philanthropic legend was immense. Community partners, businesses and individual donors all showed up to help us raise over $10,000 for Dolly Parton's Imagination Library in Meck County - meaning over 333 more children will receive books free to their home every month!

Happy Dolly Day, Charlotte! πŸ¦‹

Local businesses all over Mecklenburg County are celebrating Dolly Parton today, and part of what you spend goes to the Imagination Library, which mails free books to more than 30,000 local kids.

The big party is at NoDa Brewing (150 W. 32nd St.) from 3 to 9 p.m. Bring the kids for family activities and games until 6, then stick around for a Dolly dance party. Every Dolly-inspired drink sends $1 to the Imagination Library, and we're collecting new and gently used children's books too.

Can't make it to NoDa? Bookstores, breweries, restaurants and coffee shops around town are giving back all day. Find one near you at smartstartofmeck.org/dollyday.

Staying in? Give $9.25 on 9/25 at the same link.

Rhinestones encouraged. πŸ’Ž
