Derita Business Association

Derita Business Association An informal group that meets the first Thursday of each month to network, exchange business cards and discuss potential leads.

Small business, large business, and non-business folks frequently attend. There are no dues or membership fees. Even before the 1860's when Derita was still mostly huge
family farms, there was a row of small stores and businesses
scattered down Derita Rd., an unpaved dirt single lane that
would later be known as North Graham St and as West Sugar
Creek Rd. With downtown Charlotte a good morning's r

ide
away, this is where the local folks came to shop and trade. Local businesses took their turn at filling potholes in the dirt
road, donated funds to erect the first area school, they distri-
buted the mail long before postal routes were established,
and they bartered clothing, seed, fertilizer and canned goods
for locally grown crops. A century later they were still at it,
installing local street lights and supporting the Volunteer Fire
Dept. Local Businesses were supporters of the Derita-Statesville
Road Community Organization, when the community fought
annexation in the 1970's and they have been generous partners
in many ot the projects launched by the Churches. So it was
no surprise when they organized an Association of their own in
2004. With the economy starting its slide downhill, DBA decided to
shore up the local market by reminding folks that it costs less,
is more convenient, and thatresidents get faster service when
you shop closer to home.

Many thanks to those who attended the public meeting with NCDOT on Tuesday May 16. There was a comprehensive presentation from Warren Cooksey of NCDOT Division 10, as well opportunity to vent and ask questions.
This project has seen some unprecedented problems mainly because of the web of utilities above and below ground in the Right Of Way that have not been properly documented through the decades. Responsibility for the utility SNAFUS lies with a myriad entities, and NCDOT will probably use this project as a case study to try to improve the ways utility right of ways are granted, records are kept, and utility surveys are done.

Right now we are in the peak construction time, so we can expect to see a lot of action along the project route. For those who just want to know WHEN it will all be done, the projection is for late 2018.
The May 2017 NCDOT newsletter has been emailed - it includes a link to the NCDOT website where you will find lots of information including detailed maps. Also attached are the slides from the meeting presentation. Please send an email to [email protected] if you would like to receive Derita updates.
