David Howard, Chairperson of the Metropolitan Public Transportation Authority (MPTA), and Brent Cagle, Interim Chief Executive Officer for the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS), gave an update on the transit system plan at Commissioner Arthur Griffin's Lower Steele Creek Community Meeting on June 4. Highlights include:

~The PACE Act, passed by the General Assembly, established a Metropolitan Public Transit Authority and authorized a 1% sales tax referendum, which passed last year.

~In the Better Bus plan, 60% of riders will get 15-minute service and all routes will have 30-minute service.

~Microtransit will offer curb-to-curb on demand service within zones.

~The plan will provide rail service on the red, silver, and gold lines.

Bert Lynn, Division Director, Capital Planning, Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation, gave an update on parks in Steele Creek at Commissioner Arthur Griffin's Lower Steele Creek Community Meeting on June 4. Highlights include:

~A sprayground and other improvements are planned for Winget Park.

~The extensions of Walker Branch Greenway and Hoover Creek Greenway should be complete by July.

~The McDowell Nature Center will be replaced by a new +/- 12,000 square foot center closer to the entrance in FY 2028.

~Park and Rec is acquiring properties to address gaps in under-resourced communities to keep ahead of development.

~Park and Rec has purchased an 8.4-acre property on Sandy Porter Road between Brown-Grier Road and Red Hickory Lane. Park and Rec will conduct a feasibility study to determine how to develop this property.

~Park and Rec has purchased a 31-acre property on the south side of Brown-Grier Road (former Grier dairy farm property). Park and Rec will conduct a feasibility study to determine how to develop this property, which will include a greenway trail along Steele Creek.

Captain Andrew Studney of CMPD Steele Creek Division gave an update on the division at Commissioner Arthur Griffin's Lower Steele Creek Community Meeting on June 4. Highlights include:

~Crime is down, citywide and in Steele Creek Division.

~CMPD introduced a Civilian Crash Investigations Unit. Most traffic accidents are civil rather than criminal events and don't require an officer to investigate.

~Steele Creek Division has a population of over 100,000. If it were a city, it would rank 10th in population in North Carolina.

~CMPD is always recruiting, both for officers as well as Civilian Crash Investigations Unit staff.

Stuart Basham, NCDOT Division 10 DM-STP Program Manager, gave an update on state highway projects in Steele Creek at Commissioner Arthur Griffin's Lower Steele Creek Community Meeting on June 4. Highlights include:

~The Highway 160 Widening Project currently is in the design phase. Both parts of the project (north and south of Hwy 49) are scheduled to be let for bids in spring 2030.
~Construction is scheduled to begin on an improvement to the Pine Harbor Rd/Shopton Rd W intersection in Fall 2026. This will change the intersection from a "Y" to a "T."
~Installation of a new traffic signal at S Tryon St and General Drive is scheduled to be complete this summer (but it appears to be complete now).
~Construction is underway on a directional crossover on S Tryon St at Nevada Blvd.
~The bridge on Shopton Road over Coffey Creek is being replaced because repairs were no longer feasible. Shopton Road will continue to be closed until the new bridge is complete in winter 2027-2028.
~Replacement of the bridge on Shopton Road W over Lake Wylie near the fire station is scheduled for construction to begin in fall 2029. Expect detours.
