New Generation of African American Philanthropists

New Generation of African American Philanthropists Charlotte’s Black philanthropic collective inspiring action thru the power of Black philanthropy since 2006

NGAAP instills a sense of belonging and purpose, inspiring and empowering us all. To become a member of NGAAP, simply commit an annual minimum of $365—one dollar a day—to our collective fund at Foundation For The Carolinas. We urge members to commit financially for at least three years at the outset, and then to recommit annually after the initial three years. As a philanthropic collective, we po

ol our charitable dollars to invest in and strengthen the Black community of Charlotte and beyond. We boost the impact of our dollars by also contributing our time, talent, truth and ties to community. We meet an average of once a month to socialize, learn and make key decisions. Members are expected to engage in monthly meetings, which run 90 to 120 minutes, as well as participate in our annual daylong Winter Advance. In addition to monthly meetings, members commit an average of 36 hours each year for volunteer service; community events and forums; learning about trends and new ideas in philanthropy; and engaging in our grantmaking cycle. Annual member gifts, along with contributions from supporters, fund our grantmaking to Black-founded, Black-led, Black-benefitting nonprofit organizations serving Charlotte-Mecklenburg. To learn more, email Membership Leaders Ed Franklin and Diatra Fullwood at [email protected].

A Night for Leaders on the Rise

Some of our members participated in a wonderful evening with YBLA - Young Black Leadership Alliance's Young Professionals (ages 21-35). An impressive group of emerging leaders...Black history in the making!

Thursday evening, nearly a dozen members happened to sign up and show up for Charlotte Center for the Humanities & Civic Imagination's Forum to hear noted journalist, author and educator Jelani Cobb, Ph.D.

A full-house in the The Mint Museum auditorium, yet we managed to get a group photo with Dr. Cobb and almost every circle member who attended.

It was a terrifically timely discussion on media and the field of Journalism. An overall great evening, and while no photo or audio here, Sequina DuBose's opening musical performance of the spiritual "Witness" sent shivers. Brava!
