🦇 Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Mystery Night Hike this past Saturday at Eastover Ridge Preserve!

Cool fall temperatures set the stage for an evening of Halloween-themed outdoor education, exploration, and discovery for families and kids of all ages.

As part of our Jenner Wood V Citizen Science Program, participants learned about regional plants and fascinating nocturnal wildlife from Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation and Catawba Lands Conservancy staff.

One of the highlights of the evening was using an echo meter to track, record, and identify ultrasonic bat calls in real time, giving attendees a unique glimpse into the hidden world of bats.

Happy Great Trails State Day – Saturday, Oct. 17!

Today is an annual celebration of North Carolina’s hiking, biking, paddling, running, climbing, and equestrian trails. Catawba Lands Conservancy and the Carolina Thread Trail are proud to partner with Great Trails NC in promoting all types of trails across NC.

Call a neighbor or friend, lace up your shoes or boots, get on a bike, borrow a kayak, or saddle up your horse and get outside on a trail!

📸Now presenting our September observation of the month!

Congratulations to this month's winner, Black-Michalski on iNaturalist. This observation is of a Schweinitz's Sunflower, a federally endangered rare plant species. These flowers bloom in the late summer/early fall. They are native only to the Southeastern Piedmont and can be found on several of our preserves!

Fun fact: this flower is named for Lewis David von Schweinitz (1780–1834), a Salem, North Carolina clergyman and botanist who discovered the species.

Did you know that millions of birds are now making their annual journey south along the Atlantic Flyway, one of North America's major migration routes? Charlotte sits directly beneath this aerial highway, making our community an important stopover for countless species.

Thanks to tools like birdcast.org provided by Cornell Lab of Ornithology, you can see live migration data and migration forecast for our area.

Most of these migrations occur at night, and these migrating birds face many challenges, including a potentially deadly combination of artificial light and glass.

How you can help migrating birds:
• Turn off unnecessary outdoor lights between 11 pm and 6 am.
• Close blinds or curtains at night when possible.
• Use motion sensors instead of leaving lights on continuously (bonus: and save $$$ + electricity).
• Support bird-friendly building designs and window treatments.

Volunteer Opportunity: Trail maintenance workday at Duke Kimbrell Trail in Belmont, NC

Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026
8:30am - 1pm

Join us in recognizing Great Trails State Day on Oct. 17th by volunteering to help tackle overgrown vegetation, remove accumulated sediment, and resolve key drainage issues on the Duke Kimbrell Trail. This is a great opportunity to learn about trail stewardship firsthand and support the conservation mission of Catawba Lands Conservancy and Carolina Thread Trail. No experience or tools are required to participate.

Volunteers – mark your calendars for Creek ReLeaf on November 21st from 9am-noon.

The Creek ReLeaf Program is a collaborative effort of the Charlotte Public Tree Fund , Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services, North Carolina Wildlife Federation, Catawba Lands Conservancy and Carolina Thread Trail, and dedicated volunteers and financial supporters to plant trees in riparian areas (floodplain and stream buffers) of Mecklenburg County.

Reforestation efforts thus far have resulted in large scale tree plantings along Irwin Creek, Stewart Creek, Briar Creek, McDowell Creek, Little Sugar Creek, the Catawba River, the Rocky River and in several public parks and along greenways.
