Spring break YRM edition! This school break is a long one due to Easter - 28 days! With the students returning to school this week, we wanted to share a few of the highlights:

- 15 people in the house; which means shopping for and preparing a lot of meals. 3 meals times 15 people = 45 meals per day, 45 meals times 28 days means 1,260 meals served!
- 420 smokies (breakfast sausages) and eggs will be consumed
- 140+ chapati (flat bread) made and consumed
- Over 500 avocados picked
- 5 vegetables planted: tomatoes, Chinese cabbage, peppers, spinach, and bush beans
- 3 trips to the Farmers’ Market
- 2 wisdom teeth removed
- 2 new pairs of eye glasses (no more squinting and headaches, yay!)
- 1 birthday and 1 really big party with 42 guests
- 3 birthday cakes: 1 for school, one for the family party, and one for the big party
- 452 books were scanned and recorded in our new library system, the kids loved helping with this!
- 2 fun excursions, one to the movies with a scavenger hunt after and one to the trampoline park!
- 1 power outage with ice cream because Papa forgot to pay the bill (oops!)
- 2 water tank refills needed

Phew, we are tired! And that doesn't include the home work done, art projects, stories read, games played, and prayers offered. We are so thankful for all of your support while we answer God's calling serving these students and their families.

Putting our Big Five in Practice! The rocking chairs and our new Rocking Station help with trauma relaxation/decompression and sensory processing issues. And a bonus...between two windows will get a good cross-breeze on hot days!

As a side note, have you ever received a furniture delivery by motorbike (or boda-boda, as they call them in Kenya)? Hand made in 3 days and delivered in style!

A very special student spotlight! This young man's how it started/how it's going is an amazing story of how much God can and is doing through Yellow Rhino Ministries.

He joined YRM at the age of 11, during a time of significant grief and loss in his life. With our support and a lot of hard work his grades earned him a spot as the youngest student to attend the Safari Retreat in December 2023.

The end of 2024, high junior year of high school, saw a low point in his grades after more grief and loss and a school that served more as negative influence than support. Mama Chris made the decision to have him repeat that school year, as he was on the younger side of the grade age-wise, and because she knew with better support he could do much better. The new school however saw much of the same problems, to the point that we pulled him out and placed him in a new school part-way through 2025; this is very rare and very difficult to do in Kenya (especially as Mama and Papa were in the US at the transition time!)

By the end of the year his grades were much improved, and he was even one of the highest in his class. This school is well known and respected, and he has been able to thrive in a much more positive environment.

Well Term 1 2026 has now concluded, and his report card was definitely fridge magnet worthy! From a D average at his old school, he now has an A- average! On top of that, he is 1st out of his his unit of 44 students, and 3rd out of 144. AMAZING!

To celebrate (and as an early birthday gift) he was all smiles when he opened up his brand new pair of headphones. It is very rare to find him not listening to music, so we are sure these will become a near permanent fixture on his head while at home.

Way to go! Everyone at YRM is so proud of you! and we are sure you will continue to work hard while STANDING FIRM in your faith and SHINING BRIGHT with the light of Christ!

Our kids came home H-U-N-G-R-Y, lol, so we made β€œsmocha” for lunch or our version of it - a smokie (Kenyan sausage) with avocado salad (guacamole,) an optional fried egg, some salsa for a little kick all tucked into a wrap (instead of the traditional chapati.) They loved it! πŸ’›πŸ¦

Tatu knows that Swahili lessons usually happen on Fridays, but he also missed Valentine's day on Saturday so thought he would just split the difference!

Valentine's Day isn't celebrated quite as widely in Kenya as it is in the states, but love of course is universal! It is starting to become more and more prevalent though, check out the mall decorations!

So next time you want to tell someone you love them, try saying it in Swahili - Nakupenda! (naa-koo-pen-duh)

Tatu "nakupendas" all of you! (and yes, he knows that is not the correct grammar, but it is fun to say!)
