BACK A BIG TEN SCHOOL. SAVE LIVES! AUGUST 27 - DECEMBER 5, 2025

YOUR BLOOD DONATION CAN SAVE UP TO THREE LIVES, TACKLE THE NATIONAL SHORTAGE AND POWER THE BIGGEST BLOOD DRIVE COMPETITION OF OUR TIME.

SUBMIT YOUR DONATION TO HELP OUR SCHOOL WIN $1 MILLION FOR STUDENT OR COMMUNITY HEALTH.

The Problem
· The U.S. continues to experience severe blood shortages across the country.
· Some blood centers have less than a 1-day supply of blood available.
· As people age, they become less likely to be eligible to donate blood.
· We need young people to step up and fill in the gap; but from 2019 to 2021, donations from people ages 19-24 dropped by nearly a third.

The Impact
The need for blood is constant, whether for accident victims, mothers after a complicated childbirth, people after surgery or those undergoing cancer treatment.
Someone needs blood every 2 seconds in the U.S.; every blood donation saves up to three lives.
One out of every 83 moms in the United States requires a blood transfusion after childbirth.
This competition aims to address the immediate blood shortage and build lifelong donors.
Big Ten’s 9.4 million alumni, 51 million additional fans and nearly 846,000 students can help alleviate the current shortages through this competition.
Leveraging the Power of College Sports
Abbott and the Big Ten are leveraging the competitiveness of college football to entice students, alumni and fans from all 18 member schools to donate blood.
Anyone can donate blood anywhere, anytime in the U.S. from Aug. 27-Dec.5 to count for their school; the winner will be announced at the Big Ten Football Championship Game on Dec. 6.
The winning school will receive $1 million to advance student or community health. Last year, the University of Nebraska won, and is using the funds to advance student health on campus.
Students, alumni and fans can donate at any blood donation center across the country. Schools will host several drives on campus, making donation easy and accessible for students.
Proof of donation (name, photo of donation or screenshot of email confirmation) can be logged at BigTen.Org/Abbott or by texting DONATE to 222688 (ABBOTT).
A real-time Leaderboard will be available at BigTen.Org/Abbott

We got a shoutout

To prepare for their roles in "National Lampoon's Animal House" (1978), and despite being warned against mixing with the students, the cast of the Deltas (except John Belushi, who was in New York City working on "Saturday Night Live') accepted an invitation from some girls to a real frat party at the University of Oregon's SAE house. The real fraternity members treated them with hostility, and a brawl ensued, started by James Widdoes when he threw a cup of beer at some drunken football players. Widdoes ended up losing a few teeth, and Bruce McGill received a black eye. When Belushi returned to the set and learned of the fight, he had to be physically restrained from seeking revenge. Although accidental, this real-life incident proved emblematic of the members and character of Delta House.

According to Widdoes, none of the seven principal Delta actors (John Belushi, Tim Matheson, Peter Riegert, Tom Hulce, Stephen Furst, McGill, or Widdoes himself) had ever belonged to a college fraternity.

When the film was released, John Landis, Widdoes, and Karen Allen went on a national promotional tour. Universal Pictures spent about $4.5 million promoting the film at selected college campuses, and helped students organize their own toga parties. One such party at the University of Maryland attracted around 2,000 people, while students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison tried for a crowd of 10,000 people and a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Widdoes has since guest starred in many TV series episodes, most notably as the patriarch of the Pembroke family, Stan, in the 1984-1985 seasons of "Charles in Charge." He has also produced and/or directed many episodes for various television series. He directed several episodes of "Two and a Half Men" during the show's first six seasons and began directing the series regularly beginning with season seven. He directed all but two episodes of the series' final six seasons. (IMDb/Wikipedia)''

Happy Birthday, James Widdoes!

North Carolina/South Carolina Terps - whether you knew it as the Vous or the Cornerstone, let’s not let this College Park Landmark fall victim to the pandemic. Donate if you can and help a business that I am sure is part of many of you college memories.

HELP SAVE THE ‘VOUS
and THE CORNERSTONE GRILL & LOFT

In 1962, Sam Srour and his business partner decided to open a tavern style bar in College Park, MD. Steps from The University of Maryland, Sam figured they would have plenty of customers but little did he know that the small tavern named The Rendezvous Inn would become the iconic ‘Vous that Maryland students and alumni would talk about for years to come. Fast forward a couple decades to 1986 when Sam’s two sons, Greg & Mark, proudly took over the family business to carry on their father’s legacy.

The ‘Vous remained one of the most popular college bars in the nation for the next ten years until the Srour brothers felt that changing times called for a fresh take on the establishment. In 1997 they hung up their “’Vous Shoes”, and transformed the building into The Cornerstone Grill & Loft - a premier sports bar serving classic American food, providing customers with a casual environment to eat, drink, relax and catch a game.

Since then, The Cornerstone Grill & Loft has followed in the The ‘Vous footsteps by becoming a part of the College Park experience. However, now they need the help of their patrons —Former members of The ‘Vous Crew and dedicated fans of The Stone, to save the establishment due to hard financial times caused by pandemic business restrictions. Please consider contributing to their GoFundMe page: https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-support-the-cornerstone-the-vous

They have some fun memorabilia to offer for different levels of donations. $75 dollars gets you one Vous or Cornerstone tee-shirt, $100 gets you one tee-shirt and a commemorative “The Vous” poster, and $150+ gets you a tee-shirt, poster and a Cornerstone BIG ASS draft mug!
