After more than twenty years in church leadership and ministry, something unexpected happened.
It wasn’t UNTIL I began reading the Bible over and over again, from cover-to-cover, that I felt like I was truly beginning to learn Christianity.
Not just the pieces.
Not just the verses we quote.
Not just the doctrines of my denomination.
But the WHOLE story of God with us.
His full narrative.
And the more I read, the more I realized something that shook me:
I knew more “churchianity” than Christianity.
I knew more of my denomination than I knew of the whole counsel of God.
That realization made me throw away all my “Christian books.” And for three years, I didn’t read anything else.
Not because every book was bad.
But because first, I needed to prioritize God’s written Word.
I had to deconstruct in order to REconstruct BUT this time, back from the source 📖
Back to Scripture.
Back to context.
Back to exegesis > eisegesis.
Back to learning the different layers of context instead of forcing my assumptions into the text.
And let me tell you, finding people who will do that with you is gold.
People who will read along.
People who will ask questions.
People who will comment, wrestle, study, and help you understand God’s Word directly.
That is gold.
Anything and anyone that helps you read God’s Word for yourself and understand it more faithfully is a gift.
I have started reading Christian books again.
But now?
Oh, I am so much more selective.
So much more careful.
Because it is not easy to find books that are truly unbiased and aligned with truth.
And after tasting the richness of God’s Word directly, I never want to confuse commentary with the source again.
