Wildfire smoke originating from Canada will blanket the Eastern US today and tomorrow; here in North Carolina, we will see it. Hazy skies and even some poor air quality for sensitive groups will be likely. This smoke will lead to very colorful sunrise/sunsets tonight and again on Wednesday. North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality has issued Code Orange Air Quality for most of North Carolina, which means unhealthy air for sensitive groups. Older adults, children, active people, and those with heart or lung disease may experience health effects. You should limit prolonged or heavy exertion outdoors.

Good Evening DCS Team Members,

As you are probably aware Texas is currently receiving impacts from a major hurricane, the latest reports are indicating that it may make landfall as a category 4 hurricane. This will lead to life threatening storm surge, damaging winds, and historic rainfall amounts. Upon impact this storm is not going anywhere soon and will result in heavy rains and flooding for days to come. This is the first major hurricane to make landfall in over 10 years.

The Red Cross is standing up a major response, one that will trump the response to Sandy, Irene, and Matthew. Since Monday the organization has been mobilizing human and material resources. From SC we have deployed 30 responders and 3 ERVs. Currently there are over 400 Red Cross responders on the ground and tonight there are over 900 unique positions to fill.

The primary focus is on Mass Care positions in Sheltering and Feeding, additionally there are open positions in EOC Liaison, Logistics, Technology, Staffing, and Health/Mental Health.

If things prevail as expected this will be a very long duration operation, and it’s going to take a lot of staff to support it.

This is my request to you, if you are willing and available to deploy for 2 weeks in the coming 30 days please think about doing so. This will probably be going on for the next 60+ days but we are currently focused on the immediate need.

We are asking for everyone to complete this form, https://arcwcrdcs.wufoo.com/forms/s145r8cf1affrj5/ even if you are not available (so that we know not to call/or email you). If you are not available please complete the form and indicate you are not available. If you are available please complete the form and indicate you are availability and the dates you are available for deployment. We will evaluate availability and continue to fill positions to support our co-workers in TX.

I should add this will not be an easy assignment, all of the hardship codes apply to this event except extreme cold. There will be staff shelters, long days, and hard work.

Again thank you for your commitment to serve the clients impacted in Texas and our Red Cross friends that came to assist us in SC over the past two year.

If you have any questions please direct those to [email protected] .

Thank you for all that you do!

Tony Reid

Disaster Officer, Palmetto SC Region

Team,

Many communities near the Gulf Coast of Texas are getting hit hard by Hurricane Harvey. We're launching a massive response in order to assist those in need, so we are looking for Red Cross volunteers with a variety of skill sets to deploy to the affected area for 2 - 3 week deployments. We can deploy you as early as today if you are able to go. The sooner the better. Keep in mind that once you have agreed to a deployment and are assigned you must be able to depart within 24 hours or sooner, and you must be able to commit to an assignment of at least 2 weeks in duration. Conditions will be less than ideal -- you will likely be staying in a staff shelter on a cot. If you are undeterred by that and are willing and able to commit to being deployed for a couple weeks then please let me know as soon as possible. Pam Bartley will be out of the office for a week, so I'll be covering deployment activations for volunteers from all counties within the Central Chapter during that time. Just reply directly to this email to let me know of your availability to deploy or to request more information if you are a Central Chapter volunteer.

Sincerely,

John Madrid
