We’ve talked about 𝙖 𝙡𝙤𝙩 of pieces of the animal welfare crisis this week.
This next one might surprise some people coming from us.
Because when we talk about what needs to change in animal welfare, we also have to be willing to look at the organizations working within it.
One of the biggest mistakes we make is 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗰𝘂𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆’𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗰𝘂𝗲.
They don’t.
Some organizations are changing their communities.
Some are simply maintaining the crisis.
And yes…
Some have built impressive fundraising machines without building equally impressive results.
❌The logo doesn’t matter.
❌The follower count doesn’t matter.
❌The emotional stories don’t matter.
𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀.
If you’re donating your time, your money, or your trust…
𝐀𝐬𝐤 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬.
❓Where does the money go?
❓What are the outcomes?
❓Is the organization transparent about its numbers?
❓Are animals receiving appropriate veterinary care?
❓Where are the animals staying?
❓Are they addressing the problems creating the need for rescue or only responding once the emergency is already here?
𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀.
Because if we’re only treating today’s emergencies without preventing tomorrow’s, we’re running on a treadmill.
📈The animals keep coming.
📈The shelters keep filling.
🔄The suffering keeps repeating.
✅Support organizations that are transparent.
✅Support organizations that welcome accountability.
✅Support organizations that are working to reduce the need for rescue, not just responding to it.
And understand that not all rescues are created equal.
We know this work isn’t easy. We know organizations are stretched thin, resources are limited and sometimes incredibly difficult decisions have to be made.
But we’ve also seen the fallout when the word “rescue” becomes enough to stop people from asking questions.
It shouldn’t be.
Accountability isn’t an attack on rescue.
It’s part of responsible rescue.
Because the goal shouldn’t be to build a bigger rescue.
