Join us for our 2021 Wish Ball on February 26th - taking place VIRTUALLY for the first time! This LIVE event will feature inspiring stories from our wish families, live and silent auctions, and opportunities to grant wishes. The pre-show will start at 6:30 PM and the program will begin promptly at 7 PM.

2020 has been a difficult year for kids and families facing critical illnesses. On top of their medical challenges, this year has brought added fear, isolation and new health concerns. For 6-year-old Pablo and his family, this past year also brought devastating news: “Tu hijo tiene cancer. Your son has cancer.”

At an early age, Pablo’s dad taught him to fish and one thing that brings his whole family joy is being outdoors in nature. During his Wish Discovery Visit, all Pablo talked about was wanting to fish with his dad. But his wish to go on a fishing trip almost wasn’t granted because of the ongoing pandemic. Luckily for him, supporters like you stepped up to make sure his holiday gift came a little early this year.

During their trip, Pablo and his family safely stayed in a private mountain home in North Carolina and enjoyed the comforts of leaving their worries to roast s’mores, swim, fish, and be in nature. Pablo and his dad went catch and release fishing every day! While Pablo’s cancer journey is far from over, his mom says, “His wish lifted his spirits when he needed it most, and I know it has played an important role in his recovery.”

The promise of a wish provides hope to children when they need it most. With the holidays around the corner, Pablo and his family have already received the best gift they could have asked for this year. But there are over 500 kids like Pablo who are waiting on wishes. We’re only a few short days away from Thanksgiving! We’d like to share a huge thank you to everyone who makes our mission possible including our referral sources like Dr. Scothorn! Not only does Dr. Scothorn refer wish kids from Mission Children's Hospital, he also serves on our Make-A-Wish America National Medical Advisory Committee. When asked about the impact of a wish during COVID-19 he shares,

“COVID-19 has turned our world upside down, but the impact on our wish kids has been especially challenging. Even though they cannot go to Disney World or swim with dolphins, kids are still being diagnosed every day with critical and life-threatening illnesses. Hundreds of children in our area (and thousands around the country) are waiting to have their wishes granted, and more are being added every day.

As a Pediatric Hematologist-Oncologist, I see these kids and their families at some of their lowest points, but I also have seen the light and sparkle in their eyes when they tell me of their wish. I firmly believe that the hope that comes from a wish is a vital part of the healing process (both physical and emotional). I cannot imagine trying to care for critically ill children without being able to offer some light in the darkness, in the form of a wish.”
