Charlotte Robertson experienced the turmoil and hardships of living in the area that would become Tennessee during the late 1700s and early 1800s. Robertson resided in Nashville as it grew from a small struggling settlement to the bustling capital of Tennessee. Through all this she endured, living a long eventful life to the age of ninety-two until her death , June 11, in 1843.

On June 14, 1843, a brief obituary appeared in a Nashville newspaper reading: “DIED, On Sunday 11th instant, Mrs. Charlotte Robertson, the aged mother of Dr. Felix Robertson, of this city, and relict of Gen. James Robertson, an early and distinguished pioneer of Tennessee.” Notice how this obituary defines her life within the context of her male relatives rather than her own experiences.

Though her obituary reveals little about her life, artifacts in the Museum’s collection help to preserve her history. Read more with our recent Stories blog, "Finding Charlotte Robertson: Women’s Voices from Early Tennessee": https://bit.ly/4aXczr2

Inside of Dillingham’s Store in 1938. Great photo. I also love seeing all that old advertising. Dillingham’s was located where the County Administration Building is now.

I went to a family reunion last weekend and one of my favorite cousins brought me these old Charlotte photos! They are all from around the Square.

The first one, with two men is inside, is in the old Baker store building on the west side of the Square(3 story brick building).

The other interior photo I’m not certain about. I think it would have been in one of the old store buildings that were once on the south side. Maybe in Dillingham’s Grocery. I love that old beaded board ceiling and walls.

The 3rd photo is of the old Voorhies-James house on the west side of the Square(still there). The two doors on the left side of the building went into the Bank of Charlotte. It occupied that end of the building until later on when another bank building was erected on the south side. The Voorhies-James house is the oldest house/building on Charlotte Square.

And check out the grand old house that once sat to the right of the Voorhies-James house. This is the only photograph I’ve ever seen of this long-gone building.
