D'Aste Church Preservation Project The former St. Joseph's Catholic Church was built in 1916 by Irish immigrants and their neighbors.

Even in the extreme heat of this dry, smoky summer, the old church/community center is beautiful. As you can see, the entry has been replaced temporarily for a wedding. It will be removed again later to allow for work on the steps. (John Herak photo)

Spring has come to the Mission Valley, and the old church is looking beautiful. Much appreciation to the Lyle Evans family for keeping the grass mowed and for ongoing maintenance. Notice the new fencing paid for by the D'Aste Women's Service Group and the new pavement on Dublin Gulch Road. Notice the roses in bloom by the old outhouse and the Madonna statue with mountains in the background. The entry structure, as you can see, is resting near the main building until work can be done on the steps. (M. Herak Sand photos)

The small entry porch at the front of the church had to be removed this fall because the concrete beneath it has been slowly crumbling, causing the entry to begin separating from the main building. Thanks to Lyle Evans, Doug Hertz, Ty Sinclair, Lance Evans, and Lance Voegele for taking on this challenging task. Lance V. provided the telehandler that lifted and transported the structure to a secure place for the winter.

The decorations around the door are from a wedding that took place in the fall. They're a good fit for Christmas, too! 🎄💚🎄

This photo taken in the 1960s shows what was left at that time of Tom Quinn's grocery store/post office/dance hall, located just west of the church. Only a pile of crumbled rocks remain today.
