Protect Lake Charlevoix Shoreland

Protect Lake Charlevoix Shoreland Michigan's Lake Charlevoix shoreline is threatened by a proposed private boathouse, boat basin and channel, by Scott and Debra Law.

Proposal would remove a portion of Lake Charlevoix's Shoreland Protection Strip, not allowed by Hayes Township.

On the ballot in Hayes Township is shoreland protection. The current board of trustees running for re-election is backed by Scott Law.

Challenger candidates are Bill Conklin, Sherry Baker-McCary, Kevin Willis and Laura Ford. They'll protect Lake Charlevoix and all the lakes and streams and keep our good zoning ordinance. See https://hayesvotersforchange.org

Scott and Debra Law seem to be deep-sixing their boathouse and excavation project. And they're selling off some of their land on the Lake Charlevoix waterfront. The reason could be this: their family-controlled company Zotec Partners is in serious financial trouble, and owes $307 million in the next 12 months after losing its major customer.

Still, they have a federal permit and state permit to do the project. And Hayes Township Planning Commissioners are re-drafting the zoning ordinance to permit such an excavation if state and federal permits are in hand.

The Carmel, Indiana-based revenue cycle management provider holds some $307M in loans that are due within a year but has struggled to refinance.

Michigan Lakes and Streams Association noted the win at the ZBA for protecting Lake Charlevoix's shoreland from excavation. Unfortunately Scott and Debra Law have now sued the Township appealing that ZBA decision.

Lawsuit filed against Hayes Township to protect Lake Charlevoix Shoreland, challenging the ZBA's erroneous decision the Ordinary High Water Mark. The OHWM is the dividing line between uplands and bottomlands. And they got it wrong. This needs to be straightened out in the courts, for all of our lakes.
