We moved the tiny boys from the basement to the garage for the summer. The space is smaller, but they spend most of their time in their outdoor run in the warmer months, so this is just for at night. They're so cute when they are checking out their new space and digging in the fresh bedding. 😊❤️🐓

Tony was in the wallow with Tallulah, but when I tried to take a video, he came over to the fence because he was hoping I had some treats. (Even though they had just had treats!) Nellie then had to check things out. Meanwhile, Tallulah was once again the only one I could get a cute video of. Later, Sweet William was in there, but he was just standing there for a long time. I told him to do something cute, but he didn't want to. 😆

Jo is racing back to her house for dinner. They're so funny when they run! There's never a dull moment with these guys! ❤️

Tallulah escaped multiple times today. We open the gate to allow them access to the grassier pasture. Even though we've tried multiple ways to keep them in, somehow she keeps sneaking out. Once I let her back in, she went right into the wallow and laid down. Then Nellie and Tony wanted to see what was going on. 😊

We lost our sweetest boy, Pippin, today. He was just a little shy of his 5th birthday. We had no warning. One minute he was enjoying the sunshine and eating some veggies and a few minutes later he was gone. I believe it was most likely a cardiovascular event. No matter how long we've been caring for chickens, it never gets easier having to say goodbye. Pippin was so adorable! Whenever I carried him from his indoor area to his outdoor run. He would talk nonstop and always looked so eager and happy.

Pippin and his brothers, Merry and Gandalf, came to us in August 2021 when they were surrendered by a slaughterhouse for being too small. They were 4 weeks old, but chickens are normally 6-8 weeks old at slaughter. There are approximately 9 billion baby chickens killed each year in the United States. That's around 25 million chickens killed every day. They are babies who are still peeping when they are killed to be roasted or baked or turned into a nugget or sandwich. The babies who become someone's meal don't get to live a happy life exploring the grass and enjoying sunshine, but are crammed by the thousands into cramped, windowless sheds before they are slaughtered. Most die a horrific death due to the speed of the processing lines and the companies who prioritize profits over humane treatment.

Please remember that chickens have feelings just like your dog or cat. They have personalities and find joy in life. They have the ability to suffer and feel pain and fear. Most importantly, they want to live. Please consider a more humane and peaceful way of living and leave animals off your plate.

Nelly and Tallulah were happy when I topped off their wallow. I often go out to find mud on all of them. Remember, pigs aren't "dirty," but they don't have sweat glands so they have to cool off in the wallow. They do it to regulate their body temperature and also protect themselves from external parasites and sunburns. And and I think they just have a good time when they're in there. 😊

Just some happy piggies looking for their treats. Please adopt, no matter if it's a furry, hairy, or feathered friend. Please do your research, no matter what kind of pet. Please plan to offer all animals a forever home - don't give them away when they become inconvenient. Please remember pigs are smarter than most other pets and please leave them off your plate. ☮️❤️🐖

Did you know taking care of chickens is good for your health? They definitely keep you physically active, but they are also good for your mental health. Chickens are a form of therapy, reducing stress and increasing happiness. I swear it's so peaceful and calming watching them, and they also make me laugh often!

Oliver and his girls were loving the clover today. In addition to Annie (the red hen), and Rory and Lorelei (white/black), Dory is back with her flock too. You might remember she was very sick not too long ago and was diagnosed with reproductive disease. Her new medicine seems to be helping and she's doing a lot better! Hopefully she'll continue to do well and will be with us for a long time. ❤️
