Francis Carter Preserve

Even though this was a few weeks ago - the view at Carter has changed so quickly! Not a lot of snow left around there - and the kestrels are swooping over the grasslands!

It was great to see so many people enjoying the Carter Preserve on snowshoes and cross-country skis over the weekend. The conditions were terrific in Charlestown!

Yesterday, 24 first year students from Roger Williams University came to the Francis Carter Preserve to work on a trail project. The students literally got their hands dirty, replacing 9 water bars on the road down to the grassland. The new system of water bars and trenches should move more water off the trail, and reduce erosion. As always, our best friends from Appalachian Mountain Club – Mike Parker and Jim Dowling – were on hand to help direct the students. There are a few more water bars to go, but we’ll finish up the project with other volunteers in a couple weeks.
The work day was part of RWU’s Community Connections program, a service learning project for first year students.
