Remembering Wendell Berry: A Southern Indiana Tribute

The passing of Wendell Berry leaves a profound silence across the fields, forests, and communities of the Ohio River Valley. As the George Rogers Clark Land Trust, our hearts are heavy, but our resolve to protect the working farmlands of Southern Indiana is renewed.

Wendell Berry was a “neighbor” from across the river in Henry County, Kentucky. His writings and life captured the spirit of our shared landscape and beliefs. He taught us that "eating is an agricultural act" - a truth that connects our historic Hoosier towns directly to the rolling pastures and rich lands that define our region.

For our land trust, his words serve as a permanent North Star, grounding our conservation easements in a deeper truth: “The soil is the great connector of lives... Without proper care for it we can have no community, because without proper care for it we can have no life.”
