Salt Ponds Coalition

Salt Ponds Coalition Salt Ponds Coalition is the official watershed council for the coastal salt ponds of southern RI.

Salt Ponds Coalition’s mission is to protect and enhance the health of Rhode Island’s salt ponds for the benefit of wildlife and people. In operation since 1985, we are the oldest continually operating volunteer marine water-quality monitoring program in the nation. We partner with environmental non-profits and municipal, state, and federal agencies to complete restoration projects and advocate fo

r healthy pond ecosystems. Our programs are designed to educate people of all ages about the importance of this vital resource and inspire them to become stewards of Rhode Island’s salt ponds.

We’re collecting items for our auction (The Coastal Social) and we’d love your help!

This event is our annual fundraiser and, alongside memberships and donations, it’s one of the only ways we fund our work. What we raise here really matters.

Do you have something to contribute? Think beyond the usual:
• A skill or service
• A hosted experience
• A unique or handmade item

You can also help by reaching out to local businesses- personal connections go a long way.

Reach out to [email protected] to help! And thanks for helping make this year’s auction something special. 🫶🌎💙

Join us in standing up for healthier waters, stronger ecosystems, and a more resilient coastline. Whether it’s reducing pollution, supporting conservation efforts, or simply spreading awareness—your impact matters.

Together, we can keep Rhode Island’s coastal ponds vibrant, clean, and alive.🌱

There is less than 6 hours left to support Salt Ponds Coalition and so many other great non-profits in Rhode Island.

401Gives is just around the corner, and we’d love for you to be part of it.

Each year for RI's annual day of giving, we focus on raising funds for our water quality monitoring program—the steady, essential work that keeps us informed about the health of our salt ponds. It costs more than $23,000 each year, and it’s what allows us to track changes, spot problems early, and speak up for these places we all care about.

Giving opens at 6:00 AM on March 31 and closes at 6:00 PM on April 1.

If you’re able, consider sharing with a friend or neighbor who loves the ponds as much as you do.

Thanks for being in this with us. 💙

: Kathy Caval!

The driving force behind a lot of what we do here at SPC is our volunteers. And that is definitely true of Kathy Caval!

Kathy performs water quality testing on two sites in Winnapaug Pond along with SPC Board Member Susan Carr. 2026 marks her 9th year as a pond watcher!

She has been married 35 years to Alan, and together they have two sons, one daughter-in-law, two grandkids, and two grand-fur-babies. Kathy is currently employed as the Accounts Payable manager at ThayerMahan. She loves the outdoors, traveling, and seeing her family. She and Alan live on Winnapaug Pond, so that pond is of course the one closest to her heart. They enjoy kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, and clamming in the pond.

When asked why she began volunteering, Kathy said it was because she was asked to and believes in the SPC mission. Thank YOU, Kathy, for all you do for us!
