💜 RECOVERY CHAMPION SPOTLIGHT 💜

Capt. Dick Daugherty 🚤
Charleston, WV

Some people change their own lives.

Some people spend decades helping change the lives of others.

Capt. Dick Daugherty has been doing both.

For more than 38 years, Dick has lived in recovery. Since January 3, 1988, he hasn't found it necessary to drink alcohol or use mood- or mind-altering substances.🤯

Think about that for a minute.

Thirty-eight years. 3️⃣8️⃣

Thirty-eight years of showing up.
Thirty-eight years of carrying a message of hope.
Thirty-eight years of proving that recovery isn't just possible, it's sustainable.

Over the years, Dick has worn a lot of hats. Entrepreneur. Riverboat Captain. Business owner. Consultant.

But if you ask him about his greatest blessing, he won't start with any of those.

He'll tell you it's his wife, Nancy, and the recovery that has allowed them to build a life together.

But throughout the recovery community, many people know him for something else....

The guy who answered the phone. 📱

The guy who showed up.

The guy who believed recovery was possible even when someone else couldn't see it yet.

As Executive Director of Kanawha Valley Fellowship Home, Dick has spent decades helping expand recovery support and create opportunities for people looking for a new way to live.

When asked what he wishes more people understood about recovery:

"We are sick people getting well, not bad people getting good."

That's the heart of recovery.

And when asked what he'd say to someone struggling right now?

"Reach out. Ask for help. It's not the end of your story. there is always hope for a new beginning."

Thirty-eight years later, he's still carrying that message.

And countless lives are better because of it.

Thank you, Capt. Dick Daugherty, for your decades of service, leadership, and commitment to the recovery community.

Men account for nearly 80% of su***de deaths.

Yet less than half of them with a mental illness receive treatment.

That's not a men's issue.

That's a public health crisis.

💜 RECOVERY CHAMPION SPOTLIGHT 💜

Kody Burns
📍 Hillsboro, WV

Imagine making one of the hardest decisions of your life.

You've finally decided to go to treatment.

You're scared, overwhelmed and you don't know what comes next.

And then reality hits.....you don't have a ride.

That's where people like Kody step in.

When someone finally says, "I'm ready for help," there isn't always a friend, family member, or reliable ride waiting.

As a transporter for Seed Sower, Kody spends his days helping people get to treatment because he understands something many people don't.

💜 Recovery can't happen if people can't access it.

We often celebrate the big moments in recovery; Kody is helping make those moments possible in the first place.

When asked what he'd tell someone struggling right now:

"I'm here for you. I will support you in every way possible. One day at a time. Trust the process."

That's the kind of person you want in your corner.

And that's exactly why Kody is this week's Recovery Champion. 👏

Every Recovery Champion gets the chance to recognize organizations making a difference.

This week, Kody chose:

💜 SEED SOWER, INC.

💜 Wise Path Recovery Centers

A lot of people feel like decisions about recovery are made without the voices of the people actually living it 🗣️

We’re trying to change that 💪

Next Tuesday, we’re opening our RE-PATH Advisory Group meeting to anyone who wants to be part of the conversation.

Whether you’re in recovery, support someone who is, work in the field, or simply care about the future of recovery in West Virginia, we’d love to hear from you.

The best solutions don’t come from one organization.

They come from all of us 🤲

💜 RECOVERY CHAMPION SPOTLIGHT 💜

Waneta Cunningham 🧚‍♀️
Matoaka, WV

Recovery has a funny way of rewriting stories.

She'll tell you she's one of the most positive people you'll ever meet. And she is. But her positivity didn't come from an easy life.

The woman you see sitting on the Drug Court Treatment Team is the same woman who once sat on the other side.

The PRSS you see helping people find recovery is the same woman who once needed someone to help her find hers.

The mentor you see guiding other women through difficult days is the same woman who fought difficult days herself.

THIS IS WHY REPRESENTATION MATTERS. 👏

Because somewhere right now, somebody is sitting in a courtroom, treatment program, sober living house, or at home wondering if change is really possible.

It is.

And you're not alone.

Today, Waneta works as a PRSS with Bluestone Health Association Inc.MAT Program under the leadership of Leigh Brooks, FNP. Through the program, she helps connect people to treatment, recovery support, and hope during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. She also serves on the Drug Court Treatment Team and mentors women throughout the recovery community.

Waneta is here because someone believed she could become more than the mistakes she had made. Judge Thomas Bedell's willingness to give her a second chance changed the trajectory of her life.

Every positive choice she makes, every person she helps, and every life she impacts is her way of honoring that opportunity.

She spends her life proving that belief was worth it.

That's what recovery looks like.

And that's why we're proud to recognize Waneta Cunningham as this week's RE-PATH Recovery Champion. 💜
