πECDC Community Meeting Recap
ποΈ ** Councilmember Aaron Polkey Updates**
The meeting opened with an update from Charleston District 4 Councilmember Aaron Polkey, who discussed several ongoing projects and issues affecting the Eastside and surrounding areas.
Topics included:
β’ Flood protection, storm surge planning, and resilience efforts around Columbus Street Terminal, New Market Creek, Morrison Drive, and the Eastside.
β’ The Cooper-Jackson Stormwater Project and concerns about how future development, stormwater retention, and flood mitigation projects will work together.
β’ The future of the area surrounding the former Grace Bridge footprint, including questions related to Meeting Street, Morrison Drive, Martin Park, Sykes Market, Project 3500, Grace Homes, James Lewis Apartments, and nearby redevelopment.
β’ Requests for a comprehensive city briefing that brings together information from multiple departments so residents can better understand all of the projects occurring between Meeting Street and Morrison Drive.
β’ Community concerns regarding parking, traffic, pedestrian safety, infrastructure improvements, and future transportation needs as development continues throughout the peninsula.
Residents also raised questions about Martin Park improvements, community engagement in park planning, street conditions, parking enforcement, and safety concerns at several intersections throughout the neighborhood.

Updates were provided on local youth programming and summer camp activities.
The summer program will focus on:

β’ Resilience training
β’ Educational field trips
β’ Earn and Learn opportunities
β’ Environmental education and community partnerships
Organizers discussed efforts to help students strengthen reading and math skills while providing a safe and engaging summer experience.

Updates were shared regarding partnerships with:

β’ Environmental education initiatives
Discussion included youth engagement, environmental learning, community gardening, and sustainability projects.

Community members recognized the upcoming birthday of Philip Simmons on June 9.

β’ His contributions to Charleston's ironwork tradition
β’ Preservation of his legacy
β’ Continued support for the Philip Simmons House and Workshop/ 30 1/2 Blake Street
β’ Plans to share community memories and photographs honoring his work
π΄ **Dominion Energy Tree Removal Concerns**
ECDC is supporting the Historic Charleston Foundation petition because Dominion plans to remove trees, including many on the Eastside. The concern is lack of real community engagement, replacement plans, and the cultural value of the palmetto trees

Debra Meyers was introduced as the lead for ECDC's Social Services Committee.
The goal of the committee is to improve communication between organizations, churches, nonprofits, and residents while helping connect community members with available resources.

Information was shared regarding recent changes affecting eviction records and tenant advocacy efforts.
Discussion emphasized helping residents access housing opportunities and stay informed about available resources.

The meeting concluded with an open discussion where residents shared concerns regarding:

β’ America Street roadway concerns
β’ Hanover Street repairs
β’ Meeting Street traffic safety

β’ Commodore noise concerns and quality-of-life improvements
One resident shared appreciation for recent improvements related to noise concerns near the Commodore and thanked community members and leaders who helped address the issue.
