Charleston’s historic peninsula tree canopy is a critical public asset that supports neighborhood character, livability, and environmental health. Recent and ongoing utility vegetation management and removal has generated significant community concern due to excessive pruning, removals, and a lack of clear, publicly accessible information about where work will occur, which trees will be impacted, and the decision basis for removals.

We are particularly concerned that community members are often unable to obtain timely, specific information about planned pruning and removals. Dominion has indicated that it does not provide specific trimming dates and instead refers the public to an interactive map and to mailed/email notices shortly before work begins. Often, residents report that they have not received notices.

The City has acknowledged the public frustration around this work and has stated that, while it does not control Dominion’s operations, a City arborist is accompanying crews to help ensure trimming is done as carefully and minimally as possible. Residents have reported that an arborist has not been present on many occasions.

Therefore, we seek an immediate moratorium on all tree pruning and tree removals associated with Dominion Energy and utility vegetation management on the Charleston peninsula until conditions are met by Dominion Energy and the City of Charleston.

πŸŒ† As people get ready to gather at Palmer Campus ( June 6th) for the Nourishing Neighbors Health & Wellness Fair, it’s worth remembering the history rooted in this place.

Before it became part of Trident Technical College, this site was home to C.A. Brown High School, named after Charles Albert Brown, a longtime Charleston school board trustee and advocate for education. Brown served on the District 20 School Board from 1947 to 1962 and spent most of those years as chairman, helping push for better educational opportunities for African American students during a time when access and resources were far from equal.

The school originally opened as Eastside High School before being renamed in his honor after his passing in 1962. For many families on Charleston’s Eastside, C.A. Brown became more than a schoolβ€”it became a source of pride, opportunity, community, and lasting memories.

Today, the campus continues serving the community in a different way. From education and workforce training to events like tomorrow’s health and wellness fair, this space remains a place where people come together, learn, connect, and invest in the future.
