For "do it yourself" volunteers, a variety of supplies have been placed inside the headquarters. Pickers and grocery bags are for clearing trash, scrapers, sanding blocks and green paint for freshening up signposts, and brown paint for picnic shelters (cover graffiti, etc.). You can message KSFF Volunteer Coordinator Jennifer Bauman for other tool/supply options. Thanks for helping maintain our amazing forest!

Good afternoon KSF Fans, KSF Naturalist Jess Blalock here with a little reminder that feeding ANY of the wildlife in KSF is prohibited!

🐻 DO NOT attempt to pet or feed any wild animals during your visit!
🦊 If a wild animal appears unafraid, friendly, or approaches you BE SUSPICIOUS. Alert KSF Staff! A seemingly "friendly" wild animal can become aggressive - don't risk it!
🐢 If you are bitten or scratched by a wild animal in KSF, contact a physician IMMEDIATELY!
🐍 If you suspect that a wild animal is injured, alert KSF Staff! We will send someone out to assess the situation and if necessary transport the animal for care!

Help us keep our wildlife wild and safe! ❤️

Good afternoon, KSF Naturalist Jess Blalock here with a Red Eft, the juvenile, terrestrial phase of the Eastern Newt (an amphibian, not a reptile!) and the subject of a VERY important survey! The WVDNR is asking anyone who has spotted an Eastern Newt at any stage of development (eggs, larvae, juvenile , adult) to submit their sightings to the official survey! You can learn more by visiting this link:
https://wvdnr.gov/plants-animals/surveys/eastern-newt-survey/
Your submissions will help our DNR Biologists learn about the population of Eastern Newts in WV, which will help them understand the impacts of chytrid fungus on the population and take preventative measures to protect our Newts! 😁👍

Good evening, KSF Naturalist Jess Blalock here with Nostoc Commune! Nostoc thrives in nutrient-poor, compacted, wet soils. It is capable of going dormant for years, and when dried turns crusty and black! It also absorbs pesticides, heavy metals, and other contaminants from the soil.
You might think that it's Algae, but it's not! Nostoc Commune is a Cyanobacteria, which are among the first organisms to release oxygen, facilitating the development of higher plants and animals! Cyanobacteria fix nitrogen from the air, and they contain pigments which allow them to engage in photosynthesis. They are capable of withstanding high UV, and can also tolerate low light conditions. In short, they are designed to survive in harsh climates!
Some of you may know this organism by the poetic name "Star Jelly"! This name refers to the old belief that Nostoc came from meteors or the stars, due to its ability to suddenly appear and disappear seemingly overnight.
Be cautious when walking on the ground where the Nostoc Commune is present, as it's known for another trait: being EXTREMELY slippery! 😅
(No Naturalists were harmed in getting these photos, but they might have slid a bit!)
