Every summer, one of South Carolina's most impressive wildlife spectacles unfolds at Silver Bluff Audubon Sanctuary.

Join us for Storks & Corks on August 8 and experience an evening with Wood Storks as they gather by the hundreds at Silver Bluff's managed foraging ponds. After enjoying light food, drinks, and conversation, guests will caravan to the ponds for a guided viewing experience timed for dusk, when these remarkable birds settle in for the evening.

With six-foot wingspans and a prehistoric appearance, Wood Storks are among the Southeast's most iconic wading birds. Seeing so many in one place is an unforgettable experience.

Space is limited. Reserve your spot today and celebrate conservation while witnessing one of Silver Bluff's signature wildlife events. Registration link in comments.

These rescued pitcher plants are thriving in their new home at Beidler Forest Audubon Center & Sanctuary!

We worked with county staff to rescue these and other native species from a site being cleared for development.

As development pressure continues to ramp up across South Carolina, we are working with partners and elected officials to find ways to balance responsible growth with habitat conservation. Sometimes that means getting our hands and helping out one plant at a time.

Spring is blooming at our Silver Bluff Audubon Sanctuary along the Savannah River! As visitors return to enjoy the 3,401 acres of longleaf pines, hardwood forests, and native grasslands, we are happy to announce a suite of facilities upgrades, from a rehabbed barn to shiny new restrooms and offices to a restored meadow near the entrance (just now flowering because of the drought). Come out and visit us soon.

A nationally recognized treasure is right here in South Carolina!

The Beidler Forest Audubon Center & Sanctuary has officially joined the Old-Growth Forest Network, recognizing the sanctuary as one of the country’s most important remaining ancient forests.

Home to the largest remaining old-growth cypress-tupelo swamp in the world, Beidler Forest protects critical habitat for birds and wildlife while giving people the chance to experience one of South Carolina’s most extraordinary natural places.

Great news: the future of U.S. South Atlantic salt marshes is looking brighter thanks to newly released state roadmaps designed to guide restoration and conservation efforts over the next five years! State-specific roadmaps for North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida outline practical steps for conserving and restoring salt marshes - like expanding living shorelines, improving water flow to marshes, supporting landowner conservation, and planning for sea level rise. Together, the goal is to conserve and restore 1 million acres of salt marsh over the coming years. Audubon South Carolina is a proud partner in this effort to advance salt marsh protection and restoration to benefit birds, such as the Saltmarsh Sparrow and Clapper Rail, and people along our coasts. Visit the South Atlantic Salt Marsh Initiative (SASMI) website for more info!

It’s that time of year! Shorebird nesting season is here!
Across the South Carolina beaches shorebirds like the Wilson’s plover pictured here are making their nests.

Nests are laid directly in the sand among existing wrack and vegetation. As you can tell, they are very hard to spot that is why during the spring and summer certain sections of beach may be roped off.

Can you spot the nest in the second picture? If not a zoomed in photo of the nest is on the third slide.

After a month of constant incubation the nest will hatch! Stay tuned!

If you want to help nesting shorebirds this spring avoid bringing your dog to the beach as canines are their main predator.

Please give shorebirds their space. All shorebirds and nest photos in this post are taken by trained biologists conducting approved research.

Today at Beidler Forest, we’re celebrating a big win for birds and South Carolina’s natural heritage.

Governor Henry McMaster joined Audubon South Carolina for the ceremonial signing of the Prothonotary Warbler Recognition Act, officially designating the “swamp canary” as our state’s migratory bird. Thank you to bill sponsor Senator Tom Davis, Senator Jeff Zell, and Representative Cal Forrest, who also attended and championed this bill.

This bright yellow songbird travels more than 5,000 miles each year to return to South Carolina’s forested wetlands, places like Beidler Forest that are critical for nesting and raising young.

This moment reflects strong, bipartisan support for protecting the habitats that birds and people depend on, from cleaner water to flood protection.

By elevating the Prothonotary Warbler, we’re helping more people connect with these birds and the wetlands that sustain them.
