Every generation has the opportunity to shape the built environment.

Today's architecture students will design the schools, workplaces, neighborhoods, and public spaces that future generations will inherit. Supporting emerging professionals is an investment in the future of our communities.

Many AIA West Virginia members, their families, and their communities were directly in the path of last night’s severe storms and flooding. The images and reports we are seeing today are devastating. Governor Morrisey has declared a State of Emergency for all 55 counties.

Please know that help is available:

• Call WV 211 for information about local shelter, food, housing, and other assistance. Dial 211 or 1-833-848-9905.

• Call the American Red Cross at 1-800-733-2767 for disaster assistance.

• Check road closures and travel conditions by dialing 511.

• Volunteer and recovery efforts are being coordinated through county emergency management offices and WV VOAD. Call WV VOAD at 304-553-0927 before traveling to an affected area or delivering supplies. Please do not self-deploy.

We are thinking of our members, families, neighbors, and communities dealing with damage and loss today. Please stay safe and share these resources with anyone who may need them.

Every building begins with an idea.

Long before steel is erected or stone is laid, architects study, draw, revise, and solve problems on paper. Those early sketches become the blueprint for places that may serve communities for generations.

This drawing documents the restoration of the historic Cabell County Courthouse Clock Tower in Huntington. It reminds us that architecture is as much about preserving what matters as it is about creating what comes next.
