Greetings all. I wanted to share some star party info for our friend, Jim Browder (Richmond VA Astronomical Society). If you are in the area of Staunton River State Park, VA, I can't recommend this star party enough.

"The Staunton River Star Party is coming up soon – October 20-26! Registration closes October 12. More information and registration is at this link: https://chaosastro.org/starparty-home/

Hosted twice annually by Staunton River State Park and the Chapel Hill Observational and Astronomical Society, this is one of the best star parties in the east. Located near South Boston, Virginia, the park is beautiful, well-maintained, and a Dark Sky Park – so designated by the DarkSky International organization. The facility is excellent for this type of event, the food service is delicious, and the park staff treats us like family. Astronomers are welcome to camp next to their telescope equipment, electric power is provided in the observing field, and flush toilets and showers are nearby. It’s an outstanding star party and highly recommended.

At this year’s October installment of the event, there will be guest speakers and vendors joining our marvelous community of astronomers – and if you want to just visit for one evening, Friday, October 24 is public night when anyone can stop by and take a look through our telescopes (weather permitting)."

This looks like a great event for those heading outside WV.

Good Evening all,
I now have some more information to pass along regarding arrangements and an obituary for Rodney.

Rodney Franklin Waugh, 70, of Cross Lanes, WV went home to be with the Lord on August 22, 2025, after putting up a brave fight against a long illness.

He retired from John Amos Power Plant where he was an operator for 38 years. Outside of family and work, Rodney was an avid astronomy lover. He was a member of KVAS (Kanawha Valley Astronomical Society) for decades and often provided leadership over the years as president and vice president. Rodney was instrumental in the funding and building of the Waugh-Haxton observatory at Camp Virgil Tate. He loved nothing more than being out at the observatory with his wife and close friends, gazing at the heavens. Through KVAS, Rodney helped establish Astronomy Weekend at Black Water Falls, the first statewide star party in WV, in 1989. This legacy continues, attracting other astronomy enthusiasts from WV and neighboring states to their annual fall conference. Over the years, Rodney presented astronomy programs to thousands of youth throughout the state to encourage the next generation of amateur astronomers. He was awarded by KVAS in 2025 with A Lifetime Achievement Award for his significant contributions to astronomy.

Rodney was preceded in death by his parents, George Franklin Waugh and Billie Jane Waugh (Brannon) of Cross Lanes, WV.

He is survived by his loving and caring wife of 43 years, Judy Ann Waugh of Cross Lanes; his daughter, Melissa Ann Waugh and her partner Eddie Dean Myers II of St. Albans; and his two grandpups, Prince and Princess, whom he loved and adored. He is also survived by his sister, Penny Lynn Gamber (Boyd Allen); along with three nieces and one nephew.

He will be dearly missed by a host of family and great friends.

The family would like to thank everyone that visited, called, and/or messaged during this difficult time. They would also like to extend thanks to the help and support their neighbors provided over the years. The family would also like to thank Dr. Ashish Sheth’s office as well as Nasim Sheikh’s office for the care they provided to Rodney.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2pm on Saturday, September 6, 2025 at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.

Family and Friends may visit one hour prior to the service at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar. Pastor Rodney Good will be officiating the services.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to KVAS c/o Stacy Brown 52 Country Way Tornado, WV 25202 or Hubbard hospice House 1001 Curtis Price Way,

Observatory Director, Jason Young along with fellow KVAS members John Marshall & Dave Roberts performed some maintenance on the Breezy Point Observatory 16” scope on Saturday, 5-24-2025.

The scope optics were in desperate need of cleaning, as well as collimation and polar alignment. Also, the scope has needed raised so it can safely clear the ground for quite a while.

After about a total 4 hours between disassembling, cleaning the mirror, raising the mount, reassembling, collimating and polar aligning, we are happy to announce the scope lands on objects much better than it had before. The optic clarity is very nice too.
