PLEASE READ!! FREE HOT MEAL!!

In an effort to help the recent flooding victims, TODAY, August 19, 2026, at 4:00 PM, at St. Anthony church in their gathering center, there will be a free spaghetti dinner. Menu will be spaghetti with meat sauce or just sauce. Bread and a cookie included and served with a drink.

The church is hosting this dinner in hopes that people will be able to come in and relax and eat a hot meal at the table. If you are unable to come to the church, please contact the United Way at 304-340-3500. It is my understanding United Way has partnered with our Charleston fire department and the fire department will deliver a hot meal to anyone who is not able to come to the church.

St. Anthony’s is located at 102 7 6th St. on Charleston Westside near Copley‘s wrecker service.

‼ If you were impacted by the August 16 flooding, here’s what you need to know about accessing cleanup supplies, flood debris collection, and reporting damage.

🧹 CLEANING & RECOVERY SUPPLIES
Residents impacted by flooding can pick up cleaning and recovery supplies at the Charleston, WV Parks and Recreation Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center during regular operating hours or call WV211 at 2-1-1.

Want to help? Cleaning and recovery supplies can also be donated at the King Center. Current needs include:
🔸 Bottled water 🔸 5-gallon buckets 🔸 Disinfectant cleaner 🔸 Flathead shovels 🔸 Fans and dehumidifiers 🔸 Heavy-duty trash bags 🔸 Work gloves 🔸 Paper towels 🔸 Mops 🔸

🗑️ HOUSEHOLD TRASH + FLOOD DEBRIS
The Refuse Department is running two separate trucks—one for regular household trash and another specifically for flood debris.

📝 REPORT STORM DAMAGE
If your home or property experienced storm-related damage, please complete the damage survey: https://survey123.arcgis.com/share/de033ec0327f4a5db41884eb5fc0974b

The more residents who complete the survey, the more complete the picture of storm damage across Charleston will be. This information will help local and state emergency management teams assess the overall impact of the flooding and identify community needs.

Please note: The damage survey is not an application for financial assistance.

It's back to school! 🍎🏫 This building on the West Side has shaped generations of West Side kids since it opened in 1940. It ran as a high school for almost 50 years, then became home to middle schoolers once Capital High opened in 1989.

What's a memory (good, bad, or funny) from your time in this building?

For almost 70 years, the smell of fresh bread drifted across Charleston's west side from the Purity Maid Bread building on Bigley Avenue - 11,000 square feet of ovens running around the clock. Later became Flowers Bakery. 🍞

What's a west side bakery you remember (or still miss)? 🥐🥯🥖🥨

Join THRIVE Corps: Fall 2026 Recruitment is Here! 🙌

Ready to build a better West Virginia? THRIVE Corps is officially recruiting for our Fall 2026 AmeriCorps VISTA cohort, and we're looking for passionate changemakers (18+) who are ready to make a lasting impact while gaining valuable professional experience.

At The Hub, we believe that Teamwork and Hope inspire Remarkable Innovators and Vibrant Economies (THRIVE). A year with THRIVE Corps is a chance to strengthen communities, develop leadership skills, and help create sustainable solutions alongside nonprofits and local governments across West Virginia.

This fall, we're filling 15 AmeriCorps VISTA positions across the state, offering opportunities that match a variety of interests and career paths. Members receive a living allowance, healthcare benefits, relocation and childcare assistance (if eligible), professional development, and an end-of-service award that can be used toward education or received as cash.

Interested in learning more? Join our virtual THRIVE Corps Fall VISTA Info Session on Wednesday, August 13, at 12:00 p.m. The one-hour session includes a presentation about the AmeriCorps VISTA program, an overview of current opportunities and the application process, and a Q&A with current and former THRIVE Corps members who will share what a year of service has meant to them.

Whether you're launching your career, making a career change, or returning to the workforce, a year of service can open doors while making a meaningful difference in communities across West Virginia.

Register for the info session here: https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/z6JehgKAR9qFtryCDrXSGg

Questions? Contact the THRIVE Corps team at [email protected]. We look forward to connecting with you!
