We are roughly a week away from our Annual Parkersburg Sleep Out Fundraiser to raise money toward our federal match for our Transitional Living Program grant.

We are roughly two weeks away from our Annual Parkersburg Sleep Out Fundraiser to raise money toward our federal match for our Transitional Living Program grant. This year has been especially challenging, and despite our very best efforts, we are only at 25% of our match goal. All donations and sponsorships go directly to the program and help youth coming out of homelessness in our community find peace, safety, and security while developing the skills they need to maintain successful independence.

Our program rating is an A+ and our outcomes for this program are exceptional, with 84% of clients who have completed our program maintaining their employment, housing and connections 24 months or more post graduation. That means your investment in this program truly makes a difference. It is a program that truly works.

We need your help today. Help us continue to do this important work in our community to make sure that no young person has to be without safe and stable shelter.

The Children’s Home Society of West Virginia (CHSWV) is proud to announce that it has been awarded accreditation by the Council on Accreditation (COA), recognizing the organization’s commitment to providing quality services and support to children, youth, and families throughout West Virginia.

COA accreditation is awarded to organizations that demonstrate adherence to recognized standards of best practice in the delivery of human and social services. The accreditation process includes a comprehensive review of an organization’s programs, policies, practices, leadership, staff qualifications, quality improvement efforts, and commitment to the safety and well-being of those it serves.

The COA accreditation process provides organizations with an opportunity to evaluate their practices, identify opportunities for improvement, and strengthen the systems that support the children and families in their care. For CHSWV, the process reinforces the organization’s ongoing commitment to accountability, excellence, and continuous improvement.

The Children’s Home Society provides services designed to support children, youth, and families, including foster care, adoption, emergency child shelter services, independent living, family support, and other programs throughout West Virginia.

Children’s Home Society has been accredited for 33 years, with its first accreditation in 1993. We are pleased that our organization met all 973 standards. Our next accreditation process will take place in 2030. We look forward to continuing to care for West Virginia’s children and families at the highest level for many years to come.

There are many ways such as fostering, adopting, assisting foster parents, mentoring, joining an advisory council, teaching life skills, or donating items or funding.

The Children’s Home Society is pleased to announce the nomination process for the 2026 Nancy Stuart Tonkin Award is official underway. One or more award winners will be selected and presented with a cash award of up to $1000 at the at the Children’s Home Society Annual Meeting in November.

Nominations can be made by individuals or groups. Past nominations can be updated and submitted. Anyone who meets the criteria is eligible and can be nominated. More than one nomination for any individual can occur.

About the Honoree...

Nancy Stuart Tonkin exemplified advocacy in her work with Children’s Home Society and others. Nancy was successful in all her roles at Children’s Home Society. She was an employee and used research to improve casework protocols. She was a Board Member, Board Chairperson, and Board Member Emeritus. Nancy was an effective recruiter of board members, supporters and volunteers.

She was tireless in communicating the mission of CHS to the community and interpreting the community’s reaction. Nancy Chaired the Board of Directors during the 100-anniversary year. Nancy was responsible for linking Children’s Home Society with OMEGA and other organizations which resulted in millions of dollars of support for programs. Nancy lobbied for Children’s Home Society and other child welfare agencies and was successful in improving foster care payments allowing the Society to significantly expand their foster care program. She was trusted and effective advisor to the Children’s Home Society in all public policy matters. She was a strong advocate for permanency, child well-being and family support services.
