West Virginia Food & Farm Coalition

West Virginia Food & Farm Coalition To build the local food and agriculture system in West Virginia in a way that provides viable income

Our conviction is that when West Virginia farmers and food producers become more directly connected to West Virginia consumers, the results include healthier people, greater business opportunities, stronger communities, and a unique economy reflecting our state’s proud heritage of self-sufficient food production. We are especially dedicated to the success of small-but-growing West Virginia food bu

sinesses and beginning farmers focused on selling to local consumers. To advance these ends, the Coalition helps build linkages among farmers, processors, distributors, educators, agencies, nonprofits, farmers markets, restaurants, youth groups, institutional food service, and anyone else interested in making our local food economy stronger. Rather than launching food enterprises or building big programs and facilities of its own, the Coalition’s office serves these groups by answering questions, raising awareness about useful resources that already exist, identifying and sharing successful business models, and helping people to connect with each other on collaborative projects. The Coalition also works to create venues where West Virginians can discuss big-picture issues related to West Virginia food and agriculture, and talk collaboratively about how to address challenges and take advantage of opportunities. Many agencies and organizations exist in West Virginia to support food eaters, food producers and everyone in between. We seek to tie the threads together and to help continue a statewide conversation among multiple sectors about how to help West Virginia’s local food economy grow.

The Mountain State Market Academy was built for Appalachian value-added product businesses that are ready to grow but need a little help getting there.

Moving into stores, wholesale accounts, and larger markets can feel overwhelming when you're trying to run a business, work a full-time job, manage a farm, or take care of family responsibilities all at the same time.

That's why the Mountain State Market Academy was designed to work around the realities of growing your business. Over the course of six months, sessions are held online and mostly in the evenings, making it easier to participate without stepping away from your business during the day. We also understand that every producer's schedule is different, and we work with participants to ensure they get the support they need.

This no-cost, six-month program provides one-on-one coaching, hands-on business guidance, and practical training tailored to your products and goals. We'll help you navigate pricing, packaging, labeling, scaling production, and finding new markets so you can confidently take the next step.

If you've built something worth sharing, we'd love to help you grow it.

Applications are open now. Scan the QR code or visit www.wvfoodandfarm.org/mountain-state-marketing-academy to apply.

This is a hybrid internship program that gives students the chance to learn through real-world host-site placements, online education, and hands-on experience in local food systems, entrepreneurship, and community agriculture.

At interns will learn about maple syrup production, forest farming, tree identification, seasonal farm work, and community engagement through events such as WV Maple Days.

At interns will gain experience in food processing, packaging, value-added product development, inventory management, and food safety, and learn how local products reach market shelves.

At interns will work inside a café, coffee roastery, retail market, and food hub while learning food preparation, CSA packing, customer service, inventory management, and community food operations.

These internships are about more than work experience. They are about learning from the people growing, preparing, and building a stronger local food system across Appalachia and West Virginia.
