"Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation - which had become official January 1, 1863."

Families, communities, and cities across the nation are celebrating the true independence of African Americans. You can find out more information at juneteenth.com and head to ccpl.org to check out books and media about the celebration.

Check out this Buxton Books event with New York Times bestselling author/Newberry medalist Kwame Alexander (a past Black Ink keynote) and Charleston Literary Festival Director Sarah Moriarty.

The two authors will both be in the bookstore for a conversation on Kwame’s new memoir, Why Fathers Cry at Night - his life (so far) told in love poems, letters, and family recipes.

Come by to get a signed and personalized copy of the book and hear what Kwame and Sarah have to say about the memoir, the recent TV adaptation of Kwame’s The Crossover for Disney+, and anything else that comes up along the way!

RSVP to [email protected] with your name and the number of people in your party.
