About the JHSSC

Founded in 1994, the JHSSC is the largest Jewish membership organization in South Carolina, dedicated to studying, preserving, and promoting awareness of the history and culture of the Jews of South Carolina. With meetings held throughout the state, it publishes a biannual magazine, sponsors historical markers at sites of Jewish interest, and includes a statewide survey of Jewish burial grounds, available on its website.

The Society’s major research initiatives have been developed under the auspices of the Jewish Heritage Collection housed in Special Collections at the Collegeof Charleston’s Addlestone Library, which includes an extensive manuscript collection and hundreds of oral histories. The Society is further enhanced by the Pearlstine/Lipov Center for Southern Jewish Culture, its sister organization housed within the Yaschik/Arnold Jewish Studies Program.

The JHSSC is currently developing the Jewish Merchant Project, in order to collect and promote the histories of the Jewish peddlers and merchants who have called South Carolina home for more than 300 years. For more, visit JHSSC.org.
