Six years ago, Shiloh Ray and her brothers escaped enslavement at a Confederate camp during the Civil War. Now they enjoy their freedom by working at a saloon they own in Choctaw Territory. Though Shiloh hasn’t seen the soldier who’d helped them steal away since then, he was never far from her mind…or her heart.

After the 2015 AME Massacre, the Charleston community was confronted with having to understand the underlying racial issues affecting the people living in the area. The historical traumas surrounding racial injustice still affect not only our culture and society, but also how often excluded members of the community interact and feel valued.

Our Greenbag Lunch Series: Institutional Racism takes place on Wednesday, April 6th and features representatives from See The Stripes: Clemson University, African American Studies Program at CofC, Southerners on New Ground, and Bonner Leader at the College of Charleston.
