Unchain Charleston

Unchain Charleston Unchain Charleston is breaking the chains and improving the lives of dogs in the Lowcountry. Fences

Under the Pet Helpers umbrella or programs, a group of volunteers has formed Unchain Charleston. Unchain Charleston is a concerted effort to spread awareness about the plight of chained dogs and to build fenced for chained dogs in the Low Country. By providing an alternative to chaining, Unchain Charleston keeps dogs out of the shelter system and in their loving homes. Beginning in April 2012, Pet

Helpers will fund an average of 1 fence build per month in an effort to improve the lives of dogs in the Low Country. Tethering, or chaining, is legal in the state of South Carolina. Laws require that clean water, food, and shelter be made available to the dog. However, a life on a chain is not ideal or desirable for any animal. Unchain Charleston provides the dog with a fence, a dog house, water and food buckets, a shade canopy, free spay/neuter, and vaccines. If you would like to apply for a fence or know someone that would please complete and submit the fence submission form on our webpage at https://pethelpers.org/unchain-charleston/

We are excited to announce that our Unchain Charleston program is back!

We would like to welcome our new Unchain Coordinator Jason, who got straight to work!

Are you ready to burn some calories while helping animals at the same time?! Well, WE NEED YOU!

Our first mission is to dismantle a previous Unchain fence. Jason needs a crew to go to a home on James Island, the morning of July 23rd. You will be pulling concrete and fences out of the ground, so be prepared to get those muscles working!

We will meet at Pet Helpers around 9am. From here, we will carpool to the residence and get straight to work! If you are interested in participating in this amazing program, please let me know!

Please remember that if you are willing to participate we encourage you bring some water to stay hydrated! We can't make this program work without you and we are so excited to have it back!

As the temperatures start to get cooler Unchain Charleston will be accepting donations of fresh, dry, straw for our dogs in need! Straw (not hay!) makes a great dog house insulator for our Unchain Charleston pups during these colder nights.

Please consider donating some straw today! Drop off your donations at Pet Helpers Adoption Shelter and Spay/Neuter Clinic at 1447 Folly Road on James Island.

Thank you so much!!

In honor of all the Veterans, 2 and 4 legged. Thank you. ❤️🤍💙

Our Story

Unchain Charleston is an outreach program through Pet Helpers Adoption Center and Spay/Neuter Clinic that helps change and enrich the lives of dogs currently living on chains across the Low Country.

Through our program, with the help of monetary donations and amazing volunteers, we are able to build modern enclosures with shade structures and dog houses. This drastically alters the lives of those animals in need. Through the program, the candidates receive spay/neuter surgeries, medical services, and enrichment plans for the duration of their lives. We work directly with the families to provide the best care, and best future possible for these precious babes.

Unchain Charleston Volunteers are able to directly impact our community by giving their time to build the enclosures, maintain enrichment and follow-up plans, and scout potential candidates for future projects. The expression of gratitude we receive from the animals the moment the chain is broken, and they enter their new world for the first time, is something one never forgets.

If you, or someone you know, would be a candidate for an enclosure, or if you are interested in volunteering, please contact [email protected] today!
