Monday Made Local: Meet our JLC business owners!

After graduating CofC and moving away from Charleston, Carolyn McCalley returned about 2 years ago and now lives in West Ashley. In those interim years she discovered an interest in and love of wine, and was looking for a local wine shop over on this side of town. Turns out, there’s not much!

Considering a career change from my previous job, Carolyn began looking into what it would take to open my own shop in West Ashley, and opened August Wines in July. We specialize in smaller-production, lower-intervention wines from around the world, and with a range of price points to suit budgets from weeknights to special occasions.

August Wines also offers regular in-store tasting events, online ordering, custom cases (and half-cases!), bulk ordering services for any occasion, and is available to host private events.

This month, we’re proud to spotlight Lowcountry Orphan Relief (LOR) and their commitment to providing support and essential resources to South Carolina children experiencing or at risk of abandonment, abuse, and/or neglect.

Through our partnership, Junior League of Charleston provides funding and volunteers to help organize LOR’s Just in Case Care Closet and pack the thousands of care kits distributed to children throughout the year. These kits provide comfort and essential items to children during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to support LOR’s mission and help ensure that every child receives the care, dignity, and resources they deserve. 💙
