Mississippi County 4-H Members

Mississippi County 4-H members recently put their sewing skills to work while giving back to their community. With the guidance of 4-H volunteer Amber Childers, members learned basic sewing skills as they created handmade walker caddies for residents of the East Prairie Nursing Center.
Childers worked with the 4-H members to teach them sewing techniques, including measuring and cutting fabric, operating a sewing machine, and putting the pieces together to create a finished project. Members were able to learn a practical skill while discovering how their new abilities could be used to serve others.
Walker caddies attach to walkers and provide convenient pockets where residents can carry personal items as they move throughout the nursing center. After completing the caddies, the 4-H members shared their handmade creations with residents at East Prairie Nursing Center.
The project combined two important parts of the 4-H experience: learning by doing and serving others. With the help of volunteers like Childers and AmeriCorps Volunteer Mr. Tom, 4-H members have opportunities to learn skills that can last a lifetime while also making a difference in their communities.
For these Mississippi County 4-H members, a little fabric, thread, and time became much more than a sewing lesson. It became an opportunity to learn a new skill, show kindness, and give back to others.
The members said the experience was meaningful in different ways. For Willow, the project was an opportunity to have fun and make new connections. “It was so fun. I got to meet new people.”
Nevaya enjoyed seeing how their work could brighten someone else’s day. “It made me feel good. I liked giving the people in the nursing home the things that we made.”
Ella said one of her favorite parts was seeing the residents’ reactions. “I liked watching the resident’s faces light up and making them smile.”
Ayla also enjoyed spending time with the residents and giving them something the group had made themselves. “It was fun visiting the residents and giving them the caddies we made for them.”
For Gabe, the visit was especially memorable because of the personal connections he made. “I liked sharing the walker caddies we made and giving hugs. One even had a flag like my Poppy’s.”
Carson found a special connection with one of the residents. “My favorite part was visiting all the residents especially the lady with the cat.”
Through their own words, the 4-H members showed that the project was about more than learning to sew. It gave them a chance to connect with others, bring smiles to residents, and experience firsthand the difference that a thoughtful act of service can make. The handmade walker caddies may have been the finished product, but the friendships, memories, and lessons in kindness were just as valuable.
