SAVE THE DATES: As part of the Justice and the Next 250 campaign, we’ll be holding a free public pre-screening of the upcoming Lynn Novick and Ken Burns PBS documentary series “Crime and Punishment in America” July 1 at the Apollo Theater in Martinsburg.  A second screening will be held July 8 at the Labelle Theater in South Charleston. More info to come soon!

The series, which will premiere on PBS in November, is the first to tell the story of America’s criminal legal system from the colonial era to today.

“This landmark series will, through gripping personal stories, explore how for more than 250 years, Americans have wrestled with the problem of crime, the purpose of punishment and the meaning of justice.”

The screenings are part of the Justice and the Next 250 Campaign, a new campaign of The Just Trust inviting Americans to look ahead to the future of justice and safety in the country. As the U.S. approaches its 250th anniversary, the campaign is bringing together advocates, culture-makers, policymakers, and community leaders to shift the conversation from what’s broken to what’s possible — centering solutions that can shape safety and accountability for generations to come.

"Here’s the reality: Most of the people targeted by Operation Country Roads were no different than you or me. They wanted to go to work, do a good job and support themselves and their families.

The vast majority of immigration offenses are civil in nature, not criminal. Unlike the president of the United States, the overwhelming majority of immigrants in the United States have never been charged, let alone convicted, of a criminal offense."

ACLU-WV and Dragline analyzed Operation Country Roads to determine the crackdown looked little to nothing like how it was described.

"This illustrates that there's propaganda, that there's misinformation going on about what was actually going on and who was actually arrested,” ACLU-WV director Eli Baumwell said. “As we've seen erosion of people's rights, as we've seen invasive policies, as we've seen families and communities broken up, it's not enhancing public safety and having to stretch the truth to justify doing this."

The American Civil Liberties Union of West Virginia said the federal government is stretching the truth about “Operation Country Roads."

NEW: A report by ACLU-WV and investigative news site Dragline has found numerous false statements made by government officials about “Operation Country Roads,” the 15-day immigration crackdown in West Virginia earlier this year.

Not only did officials exaggerate the number of arrests made in the state, they also falsely claimed West Virginia’s operation targeted child predators and drug crimes. Of the 593 arrests:

The number of arrests for sexual assault? Zero.

The number of arrests for crimes against children? Zero.

The number of drug-related arrests? Two misdemeanors.

The number of arrests of people with no criminal record whatsoever? 305.
