West Virginia Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse (WV CALA) is a non-profit citizen watchdog group committed to equal justice for all West Virginians. WV CALA has been fighting lawsuit abuse in the state for more than 10 years, and our organization now has more than 30,000 members located in every county throughout the state. WV CALA helps educate the public of the role that our legal system plays in o

ur daily lives. Lawsuit abuse increases the cost of consumer goods for all West Virginians, and discourages job providers from bringing good-paying jobs to our state. West Virginia’s unfair legal system is constantly cited as one of the primary reasons job providers consider our state “closed for business.”

Statement from West Virginia Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse on the Conclusion of the 2026 Legislative Session

“The West Virginia State Senate has just concluded another sixty days of wasted opportunity. While the House of Delegates focused on an economic development package aimed at job creation, the Senate spent its time making life more expensive for West Virginia families.

From attempting to hike the ‘tort tax’ through expanded liability to voting for politically motivated mandates that drive up electric bills, the Senate’s priorities were clearly putting special interests first and taxpayers last. They even went so far as to do the bidding of out-of-state groups by banning food products and driving up grocery costs. West Virginians deserve a Senate that works for them, and we look forward to seeing a dramatic improvement in that body following this year’s primary election.” - Greg Thomas, Executive Director.

ICYMI: WV Record, Two legal reform bills fail to pass Senate Judiciary

“For weeks, we had been waiting for this Legislature to bring up bills that would help create much needed jobs in West Virginia,” WV CALA’s Greg Thomas said. “This was the state Senate’s first opportunity to do so, and they overwhelmingly voted it down.”

CHARLESTON – Tort reform advocates are expressing concern over the failure of two bills to make it out of the state Senate Judiciary Committee. But, a statewide group for trial attorneys say the defeat of the bills was a victory for West Virginia citizens.
