Last week, we were educated by Brad Harvey & George Reeth who explained that the LENS Foundation focuses on law enforcement and neighborhood support, working to strengthen community relations and improve public safety in Charleston. They described several programs they support, including Camp Hope, North Pole giving, Shop with the Cops, and a summer basketball league.

The LENS Foundation does so much for the Charleston Police Department and our community. Brad and George described two main areas of police department investment: officer training and community education programs. They highlighted specific initiatives including conflict resolution training, the Charleston Police Executive Leadership Summit, a Youth Citizens Academy for problem children, and a Citizens Academy for community members. It was also mentioned they funded a wall to recognize police officers who have died in the line of duty and emphasized the importance of supporting police morale to ensure high performance.

The LENS Foundation works to support Charleston police officers through an annual awards gala and various initiatives. Brad & George explained that while the foundation currently focuses on Charleston, they have expanded to Isle of Palms and Sullivan's Island, and are discussing potential expansion to Mount Pleasant. The foundation is seeking support for their upcoming events, including the transition to the Gaillard Center Ballroom due to Charleston Place's renovation, and various programs like hardship funding and equipment support for officers.

Thank you Brad and George for taking the time to join us for lunch and a great discussion!

This week's program, "Dee Norton Child Advocacy Center," was chaired by Brian Meyers. His guest speaker was Beverly Hutchinson.

She has served as Executive Director of the Dee Norton Child Advocacy Center since 2021, stepping into the role at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Guided by the enduring question, "How do I serve best?", Beverly brought steady, values-driven leadership grounded in a commitment to service and an unwavering belief in Dee Norton's mission to protect and heal children.

She has dedicated more than three decades to advancing Dee Norton's mission through leadership, advocacy, and philanthropy.

Her journey with Dee Norton began in 1991 when the Center opened its doors. She served as a volunteer as a member of the Junior League of Charleston. That early hands-on experience shaped a deep understanding of the Center's impact and ignited a commitment that led to her joining the Board of Directors, where she served for five years in multiple leadership roles, including President of the Board.

In 2001, Beverly joined the staff as the Fundraising Coordinator, and was responsible for developing signature fundraising events, contributing to the organization's first endowment campaign, and expanding the donor database. She was appointed Director of Development and Marketing in 2013, assuming responsibility for the strategic direction of fundraising and marketing efforts and leading a successful $5 million capital campaign.

Now as Executive Director, Beverly continues to focus on strengthening organizational culture, building collaborative partnerships, and ensuring that Dee Norton remains a leader in child advocacy and trauma-informed care.

She lives in Mount Pleasant with her husband, Len. They are the parents of two adult children and the proud grandparents of four grandchildren.
