Charleston Old Home Days

Charleston Old Home Days September 18th, 19th and 20th 2026 It was first settled as early as 1795 by Charles Vaughan. Consequently, in 1827 the name was shortened to Charleston.

The land was granted on July 14, 1802 by the Massachusetts General Court to John Lowell. Known as T2 R5 NWP, or Township 2, Range 4, North of the Waldo Patent, it was incorporated on February 16, 1811 as New Charlestown, to distinguish it from Charlestown when Massachusetts included the province of Maine. But in 1820, Maine achieved statehood, so any confusion between the two ceased. Sawmills were

established to operate by water power at the streams. But Charleston was primarily an agricultural town. Its large farms were noted for raising horses and cattle. In 1837, the Higgins Classical Institute was founded. By 1870, the community had a population of 1,191. Between 1901-1930, the Bangor Railway & Electric Company operated trolleys on an electric railway between Bangor and Charleston. In late 1950, construction began on the Charleston Air Force Station, part of the Aerospace Defense Command. Known as Bull Hill for its location in the town, the station was completed in early 1951, and fully-manned and operational in 1952. After the base closed, it was transformed into the Charleston Correctional Facility, which opened in 1980.

This years event wouldn't have been possible without the support of all of our Sponsors.

We approached these businesses and told them "its for the kids and its all going to be free". They stepped right up with no hesitation.

They made sure the kids had 15 inflatables to bounce on including a separate Toddler section, a 24 foot tall Rock Wall that they climbed to the top, 4 bungee trampolines that the kids wore the straps off and Pony rides all afternoon. The kids participated in Childrens Pedal Pulls and won cash prizes and trophys, had 23 Backpacks and 4 bikes that were raffled off, along with a Car Show and a Blackstone Raffle for the adults.

They provided a Live Band, Shaded Seating for everyone, our Event Shirts, signs and banners as well as a generator to power it all.

And at the end of it they made sure all the trash was picked up and disposed of.

There are so many details in pulling events like these together and our Sponsors are the ones who ensure we can make it come to life.

Make sure to Thank them when visiting their businesses and check out their services, you never know when you're going to need a good business to deal with.

We have 20 backpacks that have been generously donated by local businesses!

Our sponsors are the ones who really make this event come to life. With their help we are able to do a drawing where 20 different kiddos will receive a backpack full of supplies that they can use or give to their classroom.

Backpacks will be displayed with a plastic pumpkin. You will write your name and phone number on the tickets and put in the pumpkin for the backpack you want!

Drawings will take place Saturday, September 20th around 2:00 pm on the stage after the band has finished.

**Winners will only win once**

If your business wanted to sponsor a backpack but havent been asked, please just reach out and we can accomodate you.
