Today marks the kickoff for South Carolina’s Zero Tolerance For Litter Month, where law enforcement statewide will be strictly enforcing three key misdemeanor violations: Littering, Illegal Dumping, and Unsecured Loads.

Last month, Keep America Beautiful released its new 2026 National Litter Study Report, which revealed that litter across America’s roadways and waterways has declined 34% since 2020! This study is the most extensive research conducted in U.S. history to estimate the scope, causes, and impacts of litter. While this progress is real and measurable, 35 billion pieces of litter still remain along our roadways, collecting throughout our marshes and waterways, and scattered across our public spaces. Litter is still an everyday reality for most Americans.

This study provides both a progress report and a roadmap for where action is still needed. Millions of Americans are stepping up in their communities – including right here in Charleston. We have come a long way, but we aren't done yet!
You can help by having ZERO Tolerance For Litter. Always report littering behavior, unsecured loads, or illegal dumping. Palmetto Pride offers a great reporting resource through its Litter Busters Hotline - https://www.palmettopride.org/get-involved/program/litter-busters-hotline/

Keep Charleston Beautiful will be hosting an education and awareness event for National Secure Your Load Day at the Bees Ferry Convenience Center this Saturday, June 6th!

From cleanup crews to puppy views, our James Island event was one for the books!

This Saturday, nearly 200 volunteers came together for the Greatest Charleston Cleanup: James Island edition. These dedicated community members helped remove hundreds of pounds of litter from the island's winding roads to the surrounding marsh. 🌾♻

But this cleanup was about more than picking up trash… it was about bringing the community together. After the cleanup, volunteers gathered at James Island Town Hall for an unforgettable after party filled with live music, local vendors, raffle prizes, and plenty of well-earned pizza and coffee. ☕🎶

A huge thank you to our amazing partners and sponsors who helped make the day possible:
Adopt - A - Highway & Community Pride Charleston 🌴
James Island Pride: Making Our Island Beautiful 🌳
Surfrider Foundation Charleston Chapter 🌊
City of Charleston Police Department 🚨
Charleston County Sheriff's Office 🚓
Paisano's Pizza Grill 🍕
Pet Helpers Adoption Shelter and Spay/Neuter Clinic 🐶

And of course, thank you to every single volunteer who gave their time and energy to make a difference. Events like these prove that when a community comes together, GREAT things happen!

See you at the next Greatest Charleston Cleanup on May 30th! 💙

This year, College of Charleston is partnering with Keep Charleston Beautiful to ensure this is a zero-waste event! Together, our goal is to divert at least 90% of waste generated by the event away from the landfill and into compost and recycle facilities. ♻ This feat wouldn't be possible without help from YOU!

Help us make this year's ACA zero-waste by volunteering with us! Link to register is here: https://dash.pointapp.org/events/635503

Earth Day is coming to a close, but what will your actions look like tomorrow, or the next day, or three months from now?

Earth day is more than just a single date on the calendar. We mostly know it as a day to celebrate nature and the planet, but it’s also a stark reminder of its fragility, a reminder of how quickly the balance can tip.

Acting for the planet AFTER Earth Day means transforming temporary passion and new information into repeatable, daily habits. There’s no better time to turn awareness into action.

So tomorrow, we encourage you to focus on a circular lifestyle by repairing items if possible, instead of replacing them, refusing the convenience of single-use plastics, and utilizing public or active transportation.

Make a lasting impact with small, consistent actions like composting, conserving energy, and supporting local, sustainable products.

Let’s be guardians during our brief visit on this incredible planet. You don’t have to overhaul your entire life. Small counts. It always has.

Want to live like a local AND make a positive impact on our community? Join us as a Green Team Volunteer at one of our upcoming zero-waste events! ♻

Zero-waste events dramatically reduce what ends up in landfills by diverting materials to compost and recycling, minimizing pollution, and lowering the event’s overall environmental footprint. As a Green Team Volunteer, you’ll help guests sort waste and be part of the movement proving events don’t have to leave a mess behind.

No experience is needed! Just bring your energy and love for the Lowcountry 🌾

What a lovely day to get outside with our volunteers and clean up one of our beautiful public spaces along the Ashley River! Thanks to the crew from Charles River Laboratories, we were able to remove over 150 lbs of litter. We were even able to get a quick in.

Our hard working volunteers were able to cool off afterwards with some ice cold beers from (NA).

Together we can make beautiful things happen! So get outside, do good, and get dirty!!

A big thank you to our volunteers from Jet Blue, who joined us yesterday along the Lowcountry Lowline. This small but MIGHTY team helped cover graffiti sites along the pathway, spruce things up for spring, and keep our public spaces looking beautiful for downtown pedestrians, bikers, and skate boarders!

We loved doing good and getting dirty with "Jet Blue for Good" JetBlue
