Charleston Urban Works (formerly Charleston Main Streets) is proud to begin to announce the first round of CUW Facade Activation Grant awards. Congratulations to Ryan Davis, owner of the property located at 422/424 Washington Street, W. and Wondering Wind Meadery. Ryan and his team just finished a very nice and needed facade restoration, including brick pointing, new signage, and painting the entire building. CUW's Facade Activation funds assisted Ryan with the costs associated with these upgrades. Check out the before and after photos of the building!

Be sure to stop by and check out Wondering Wind Meadery in the Elk City District of the West Side, Thursdays and Friday 4-9 PM, Saturdays 2-9 PM, and Sundays 11 AM - 5 PM.

The CUW Facade Activation Program is made possible through funding from the Truist Foundation and the Charleston Urban Renewal Authority. If your business is located within the Urban Renewal plan areas (East End, West Side, Downtown) and you're interested in applying, contact Executive Director Ric Cavender at 304.767.9800 or [email protected] (domain name change coming soon.)

Every community has a story. Every organization has a mission and a history. For a collective 21 years, Charleston Main Streets and its predecessor organizations (East End Main Street and West Side Main Street) have worked to galvanize change through initiatives to enhance exterior design, attract new visitors and businesses, and assist small businesses throughout the East End and West Side of Charleston. Throughout the years, CMS’s plans of action have grown and changed to best react to the needs and wants of the community and the businesses within. Throughout our urban neighborhood business districts, we’ve seen the creation of successful business loan and grant programs, countless public space enhancements and public art installations, events that have attracted over 2,000 people at a time from 26 different states, and incentives created to encourage consumers to shop local.

As we begin to implement a brand new 3-year strategic plan that is centered around business growth, public space enhancement, telling the story of our urban core, and increasing community engagement, a key component to this effort is reimagining not only our approach, but also our organizational identity.

We are proud to announce that Charleston Main Streets is now CHARLESTON URBAN WORKS.

The organizational name Charleston Urban Works tells a story in which community leaders, small business owners, government officials, residents, researchers, volunteers, folks and families, are open and hopeful for innovative approaches for urban solutions to spur vibrant growth, both social and economic, in order to strengthen the sense of belonging and inspire pride.

In the coming weeks, the Board and staff at Charleston Urban Works (CUW) will announce some very exciting initiatives and new approaches to engaging our East End and West Side businesses, property owners, partners, investors, grantors, sponsors, board members, and community members who will help us shape the work within our strategic plan.

Stay tuned this coming week for all of the exciting details surrounding the future initiatives of Charleston Urban Works, including existing programming and projects that have shaped what we’ve built since 2002. On behalf of the Charleston Urban Works Board of Directors and staff, we want to say thank you to each member of this community who have worked with us to continue to strengthen the local business community throughout our urban neighborhood business districts. After over 20 years, we are just getting started!
