Nix 526: So Much to Lose for So Little Gain. Nix526.org is a grassroots coalition founded and maintained by concerned citizens of Charleston County. Nix526. Fix I-26 instead!

Nix526 is a grassroots group working to stop the unnecessary expansion of I-526, which would save 36 seconds and cost Charleston County taxpayers over $2.1 Billion Dollars We are ordinary residents who believe that the $2.1 Billion of taxpayers money to build I-526 extension will help bankrupt our county and do irreparable harm to our islands, waterways, and communities. SCDOT expects I-526 to sha

ve just 36 seconds off most trips in Charleston County. There is no viable reason to waste state tax funds for a road whose sole purpose is to open rural Johns Island up for massive development. I-26 is the economic lifeblood of South Carolina, connecting the Upstate and Midlands to the Port of Charleston, which accounts for 11% of our state's jobs.

There is an executed agreement 5/12/25 among Charleston County, SCDOT, and the Infrastructure Bank to TERMINATE their Amended Inter-governmental Agreement that was signed in 2019 to construct the 526EXT. The essence of it is that some money is to be refunded to the County and the Bank by SCDOT ($3.1mil to County, $3.6mil to Bank). SCDOT will retain ownership of any rights-of-way properties that have been bought over the years (approx $48mil worth according to reports, that might not be actually correct). If this land is ever sold for other purposes then the Bank and the County would receive reimbursement of value for their contributions to its acquisition.

We also understand that efforts by County Council to secure federal permits are at this point not being terminated, and indeed there are some members who continue to try to do pursue these permits; perhaps that will be subject of a future Council vote in the near future.

While this does not say the project is totally dead given the ROW is still to be owned by SCDOT (i.e., the taxpayers), huge cost growth of road projects, future funding, permitting, EISs, and other hurdles (NIXers!) suggest that it would be extremely difficult to resurrect the project. There are some, however, who persist in pursuing this fantasy. More on that later.

For now, this is a HUGE WIN for everyone's NIX526 efforts for the difficult slog of the past 15+ years. Y'all should be immensely proud of what we all have accomplished by working, staying vigilant, staying diligent, and being strong together.

The South Carolina State Transportation Infrastructure Bank Board has voted this morning to terminate the Bank's participation in and funding for the 526EXT Inter-governmental Agreement (IGA). Charleston County Council Chairman Kylon Middleton has been given authority to do the same. When he signs the document for the County the 526EXT will be DEAD!!!!!!

Thanks to everyone who stayed the course and worked hard to defeat this project at the ballot last November, y'all have a lot be proud about in preserving our finances and natural and social environments that would have been destroyed for this ridiculous scheme.

It has taken over 15 years to reach this point, and a lot of hard work and dedication by NIXers but we can finally celebrate our success.

Enough is enough. It is time to let go of all of this wasted time, energy, and finances toward 526 and use our limited resources to fix our current roads and intersections.

"Council members should talk with state officials to see if they can redirect what is left of the state's $420 million pledge to needed projects within the county, as that pledge was made in recognition that county taxpayers are paying to improve many state roads that the state normally would have to pay for."

Charleston County voters' rejection of a transportation sales tax extension should mark the end of controversial plans to extend the Mark Clark Expressway

Speechless!

Charleston County voted Nov. 5 on a sales tax referendum meant to fund I-526 Mark Clark Extension, connecting West Ashley to Johns Island and James Island.

We have always been some of Councilman Darby’s biggest fans! Here he is, once again, speaking in opposition to the 526 extension. Please show your support of Councilman Darby by making this speech go viral!
