All regular RCC staff are Certified Dementia Practitioners, and volunteers are a vital part of what makes our programs so special. RCC facilitates nine+ support groups each month, with varied locations and times to meet the needs of a diverse array of caregivers. These open group meetings offer caregivers a safe and confidential place to laugh and cry, to share experiences and problem-solve challenging behaviors, to learn about and prepare for the journey ahead, to connect with community resources, and to give and receive encouragement and support. Caregivers are also encouraged to take advantage of other free supports, including library of books and other resources, one-on-one guidance and troubleshooting, educational workshops, and dementia-friendly events where caregivers and their loved ones spend time with other Respite families in the community. HALF-DAY RESPITE CARE
By providing caregivers much-needed breaks and engaging their loved ones with socialization and stimulation in small groups, RCC's non-medical respite program improves the quality of life for the entire family. Engaging activities for participants with the mid- to late-stage dementia include:
• Group socialization
• Brain games, puzzles & trivia
• Music therapy
• Arts & crafts
• Gentle exercise
• Pet therapy
• Intergenerational activities

With multiple program locations and programs five days a week, RCC offers affordable, convenient care for participants from age 50 to 102. Scholarships are available, making sure no one goes without respite due to financial challenges. EARLY-STAGE DEMENTIA SERVICES
Adults with mild cognitive impairment or early stage memory loss can benefit from these proactive services tailored to their unique needs. Senior Moments - In this half-day “club”, participants learn to ways promote brain health, practice wellness techniques, work together on cognitive exercises and engage in other therapeutic activities. Early Stage Support Group - Group members discuss their diagnoses and the changes they’re experiencing, offer encouragement and advice, discuss new and ongoing challenges and share their concerns for the future in a confidential setting.

💜 A big thank you to everyone who joined us today for our Care Compass community education program at the Lowcountry Senior Center!

Today's conversation focused on strategies for navigating everyday dementia caregiving challenges, including communication and physical changes, wandering and more. We're so grateful to Amy, a PT who leads our Senior Moments brain health and wellness program, for sharing her knowledge and helpful tips.

One of our favorite parts of these events is seeing caregivers connect with one another. The encouragement, shared experiences, and understanding in the room are such a powerful reminder that no one has to walk this journey alone.

📅 We'd love to see you at an upcoming Care Compass event. Visit RespiteCareCharleston.org to view and check out the Events tab, and while you're there, explore our Resources page for free guides, videos, and other tools to support you along the way. 💜

🌺🌴 Aloha from Respite Care Charleston! 🌴🌺

Our Half-Day Memory Care Program was transformed into a little slice of Hawaii today!

Members kicked the day off by creating colorful flower leis before watching some hula dancing. Then everyone enjoyed a delicious homemade Hawaiian lunch prepared by our very own "Chef" Renee featuring Hawaiian chicken with rice, sweet pineapple, peppers, and a King's Hawaiian roll. 🍍🌺🍗

Days like these are about so much more than a fun theme. They spark conversation, encourage creativity, build friendships, and create meaningful moments for people living with Alzheimer's and other dementias, while giving caregivers some time for themselves.

Want to learn more about our Half-Day Memory Care Program and the many ways we support local families living with dementia?

Toes were tappin' and hands were clappin' today at our half-day program on James Island. 👏🏼 We love our music therapist Polly, who always makes it a good day. Follow that with lasagna and fresh bread, and it was a pretty great day!

Did you know that music boosts mood, calms agitation & reduces anxiety associated with dementia? 🎼
