On this date, July 20, 1797, “Mazurek Dąbrowskiego” is traditionally believed to have been sung publicly for the first time in Reggio Emilia, Italy.

Józef Wybicki wrote the song for the Polish Legions commanded by General Jan Henryk Dąbrowski. At the time, Poland had been erased from the map by the partitions, but the opening words carried a promise that foreign powers could not destroy:

“Jeszcze Polska nie zginęła, kiedy my żyjemy.”
“Poland has not yet perished, so long as we still live.”

The song expressed a powerful truth: Poland was more than borders or government. It continued to live through its people, their language, memory, courage, and determination to regain independence.

Polish soldiers carried the song with them, and it gradually became a symbol of hope for generations living under occupation, exile, and oppression. In 1927, it was officially adopted as Poland’s national anthem.

More than two centuries later, its message remains unchanged: a nation survives as long as its people refuse to forget who they are.
