Our ECJ committee has the following goals:
The Environmental and Climate Justice Committee shall (1) seek to address environmental inequities at the local level and advocate for environmental justice; (2) develop a comprehensive and holistic local agenda to reduce pollution; (3) advance energy efficiency and clean energy at the local level; and (4) develop and advocate for disaster resilient infrastructure policies and practices.

It is our sincere honor to let you know that our elections are scheduled for November 7, 2026 from 9 AM - 9 PM. The only way that you will receive a ballot for our NAACP election is if you are a member in good standing. Please take a moment to check with our Secretary via email if you have a question about your membership at [email protected].
If you are interested in running for office, there are a few guidelines... you must have been an active member of NAACP as of April 1, 2026 and be in good standing. You also must complete an NAACP Candidates Consent Form which will require the signatures of three NAACP members in good standing (excluding the candidate).
Nominations Committee will be announced in September and the Elections Oversight Committee will be announced in October.
Please plan on being present in all of our upcoming General Membership meetings from now on! It is the best way to stay current with, not only the election, but the work of the NAACP of Charleston WV.

Sixty-three years ago, on August 28, 1963, hundreds of thousands of dedicated activists and civil rights leaders stood shoulder to shoulder on the National Mall to demand economic opportunity and freedom for Black Americans.

They lit the path we walk on today, but the work they began is far from over, so we must march again.

The NAACP is joining March on Washington: Defend the Vote at the Lincoln Memorial on August 28. This is a national moment for collective action that goes far beyond a single day on the National Mall.

This year’s march stands on three pillars:
🗣️Voting Rights: Because civic equity, equal ballot access, and community-led voter education are non-negotiable. We march to protect every American's right to be heard.
🗣️Economic Dignity: Because Fair wages and equal opportunity are not privileges. They are civil rights, and we will continue to fight for them.
🗣️Affordability: Because access to affordable college, safe housing, reliable healthcare, and nourishing food is not a luxury. It is a right.
This month, we march for the vote. We march for justice. We march for the future.

‼️We’re calling on NAACP members, our communities, and anyone who believes in justice to join us. Registering for the march today means you'll receive updates on accommodations, resources, and everything you need to know before the day arrives.

Dear Members,

The NAACP is standing with the family of Nolan Wells as they seek truth and answers about his death. Today, we announce that our Office of General Counsel will join the legal team supporting Wells’ family, alongside attorney Ben Crump, to work to understand what happened and pursue a fair review of the facts.

But the ugly truth is Nolan Wells isn’t alone.

His death is the latest in a long line of cases where Black families have been left with pain and questions. Too often, our communities are forced to fight for the truth after a loved one dies under unclear circumstances.

For more than 100 years, the NAACP has stood with Black families who want truth, fairness, and justice, and we will keep standing for truth, fairness, and justice.

On this day in 1906, in the mountain town of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, a small band of determined men and women gathered to light a spark that would help change a whole nation. ✊

They were the Niagara Movement, a group of African American leaders and thinkers, led by the scholar W. E. B. Du Bois, who had come together the year before to demand full civil rights and equality at a time when the country offered them anything but. And in the summer of 1906, they chose to hold their first meeting on American soil at a place heavy with meaning, Storer College in Harpers Ferry, tucked in the Blue Ridge where the rivers meet.

The place was no accident. Harpers Ferry was where John Brown had made his famous raid in 1859 in the fight against slavery, and Storer College itself had been founded after the Civil War to educate the formerly enslaved. So it was on that hallowed mountain ground that these leaders walked, some of them barefoot as an act of reverence, to the site of Brown's stand, and rededicated themselves to the long struggle for justice and the full promise of freedom.

The Niagara Movement itself was small and did not last many years. But the seed it planted grew. Just a few years later, it helped give rise to the organization that would carry the fight forward for generations, and the demands those men and women made in a mountain town in 1906 would echo through the whole century that followed.

It is a piece of Appalachian history too often left out of the telling, that here in these very hills, at Harpers Ferry, brave people gathered and dared to insist that America live up to its word.

The mountains have witnessed many kinds of courage. This was surely one of them. 🌿
