Riverland Terrace Neighborhood Association (RTNA)

Riverland Terrace Neighborhood Association (RTNA) James Island's Oldest Neighborhood Riverland Terrace, developed in the 1940s, is James Island's oldest neighborhood. Sizes and prices vary greatly.

The Terrace is located just 10 minutes west of downtown Charleston along Wappoo Creek and the inland waterway. The neighborhood boasts a public boat landing , Charleston Municipal Golf Course , a playground, five restaurants and numerous antique shops. Leading into the neighborhood is the historic Avenue of Oaks, consisting of 73 live oak trees believed to be over 100 years old. They once led to Wappoo Hall Plantation on the Stono River. A Civil War fortification known as Fort Pemberton, built in 1862, remains today. The Terrace consists of approximately 800 homes. Starter homes of 900 square feet begin at $200,000. Riverland Terrace has an active neighborhood association that meets 3-4 times each year. The community actively works to preserve the historical integrity of the community, thus contributing to the hometown feel.

You know what’s really spooky? 👻 How much it costs to make Halloween Under the Oaks happen! 😱

With rising expenses and Halloween falling on a Saturday this year, we’re preparing for a bigger crowd and have set our 2026 fundraising goal at $5,000 to cover security, permit, insurance and candy to refill our Wappoo Drive residents.

Take a peek at what goes into the magic, and help us keep this neighborhood tradition going!

🎃 Halloween Under the Oaks is just three weeks away!

One of Riverland Terrace’s favorite traditions is back! Join us Saturday, October 31, for an evening of trick-or-treating beneath the oaks of Wappoo Drive. Whether you’re a longtime neighbor or joining us for the first time, all are welcome!

🍬 Saturday, October 31, 5:00-7:30 PM
📍 Wappoo Drive | Riverland Terrace
🚧 Wappoo Drive closed to vehicle (including golf carts!) traffic from 5–8 PM
🚗 Parking available at Medway Park and on surrounding streets
👮 Police presence and safety measures will be in place

It takes a neighborhood to make this tradition so special, and we’re grateful to everyone who helps bring it to life each year. Volunteers are always welcome! Email [email protected] to help.

Support the candy cauldron! Our annual candy drive helps provide supplemental candy to participating homes and covers event expenses, including security, permitting and insurance. Donations are appreciated, or drop off sealed bags of candy to the porch at 2050 Wappoo Drive. Link in bio.

A record 170 households are part of RTNA this year! Your support helps fund neighborhood events and projects. It’s not too late to join for 2026…just $25/household! Our history committee is documenting historic homes, and the Garden Club’s recycling efforts earned a new bench and they continue their maintenance on the historic windmill.

Artist Sean Berube shared a model of his proposed interactive sculpture for Medway Community Garden. Support from the SC Arts Commission has helped bring the project halfway to its fundraising goal! Donations of any amount are welcome and can be made through Charleston Parks Conservancy.

Live near St. Luke’s? DOT engineers will visit October 24 (time still TBD). Please join to point out drainage issues you’ve noticed. We also welcomed Woodland Shores neighbors to discuss Riverland Oaks and its potential impacts on surrounding neighborhoods. Find more details and ways to get involved in the minutes.

Our first Witches Ride is a chance for Riverland Terrace women to meet, mingle and collect candy for Halloween Under the Oaks! Not riding? Cheer us on with a sealed bag for the cauldron. Roads will remain open to traffic; find the route and details on our website. WITCHES JOINING: please RSVP online so we can plan accordingly!

New to the neighborhood? Halloween Under the Oaks brings neighbors and visitors together for trick-or-treating along Wappoo Drive, with road closures and security to help everyone celebrate safely. 🧙‍♀️ Calling all Riverland Terrace witches!

Grab your bike, dust off your broom and join us for our first neighborhood Witches Ride! It’s a chance for the women of RT to meet, mingle and make a little magic while collecting candy for Halloween Under the Oaks. Costumes are highly encouraged!

This is a bike ride, so please leave the golf carts at home. One designated “cauldron” cart will travel with us to collect candy.

Swipe to see route map! Roads will remain open to traffic, so riders must be able to safely maintain a steady pace. Anyone who may not be able to keep up is encouraged to find a spot along the route, cheer on the witches and have a sealed bag of individually wrapped candy ready for the cauldron!

Afterward, we’ll park our brooms at Maybank Public House for a post-ride potion. Witches who can’t ride but still want in on the fun are encouraged to meet us there! 🧹🍬🍹

Help bring art to Medway Community Garden! 🌱

The Charleston Parks Conservancy is working to bring a new sculpture by local artist Sean Berube to Medway Community Garden, right here in our neighborhood.

Thanks to a grant from the South Carolina Arts Commission, the project is already halfway to its fundraising goal, and now the Conservancy is looking to raise $5,000 from the community to complete the match and bring the sculpture to life.

We love seeing continued investment in the parks and public spaces that make Riverland Terrace such a special place to call home. If you’d like to help add this piece of public art to Medway, visit Charleston Parks Conservancy or scan the QR code above to learn more and donate!

FYI if you got one of these (or do in the future), please clear the streets during the day. This was supposed to be done within three years of some of our streets being paved so we are right about at that mark. Similar ones were posted on cars and doors about a week ago, but the rain delayed it. No further knowledge of a schedule or order.

A huge thank you to everyone who came out for yesterday’s Riverland Terrace Clean Sweep! ☀️🌿 It was a hot one, but every volunteer helped make our already beautiful neighborhood a little cleaner, greener and brighter. 💚

A special thank you to the Riverland Terrace Garden Club for organizing another fantastic community event. We appreciate all you do to help keep Riverland Terrace beautiful!

CLEAN SWEEP HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED! JUNE 27! 🪏

Join the Riverland Terrace Garden Club and RTNA for our neighborhood Clean Sweep on Saturday, June 27 from 9 AM to 12 PM. Drop in anytime and help us make our streets, parks and shared spaces cleaner, greener and even more beautiful.

Meet at the windmill by the fire station at Plymouth Park to grab supplies and get started.

Bring WATER, sunscreen, a hat and garden tools. All ages welcome and it is a great chance for teens to volunteer too.

Help spread the word and let’s show our neighborhood some love 💚
